real silent choice with y pipe OR switchable muffler tip

I sold a 96 scarab 29 twin 350 to a friend. Girlfriend says ok but needs to be silent... Since I pay... wich one is the cheapest ? 2nd, do you think muffler tip are efficient enough to shut his girlfriend's mouth and make me sell the boat?
Need your opinion and expertise about that. Thanks!

the cheapest fix would be to buy her hearing protection....

Women really hate when they cant be heard. :D

To install silent choice you will have to pull the motors out to put the y-pipe in. Unless you can do it yourself it's not going to be cheap.

Both options would be good choices to have installed on the girl friend.

Actually, I have the Y-pipe option with staight tips no mufflers. Best of both worlds. Loud when you want it and quite in the channel or at the marina.

money wise, switchable muffler tips are the less expensive I would guess, right ?

Not to mention 2 motors.

There's just really no comparison between the two. Silent choice through the hub is exactly what it says, silent. It just doesn't work with bigger cams and certain cam overlaps. I use mufflers and they're pretty nice ( CMI ), but nowhere near silent. If I could go through the hub I'd do it in a minute.

I have the switchable tips and it's every bit as quit as the thru hub. I was very surprised how quit they were and much easier than pulling the engines for the Y pipe.
here is the link from eddie marineSwitchable tips

How would the cam size or overlap affect the silent choice?

No. Actually, I sold the boat to a friend of mine, but for his girlfriend to agree on buying the boat it must be silent and instead of keeping dealing the price, they want to get the silent for free, In other word, I'm the one who pays for it, that's why I'm looking for something that works well, but first as to be the cheapest...

Silent Choice is illegal up here. :( It is only legal if it is under 90 decibles with the silent choice off.

You know......you could easily be into $3000 cdn after its all said and done
You could throw some inserts in the pipes and tell her thats as good as it gets.....tell her its a performance boat not a Sea Ray
Or call Ray at www.doublerperformance.com they're in Barrie Ont.......he could UPS it out your way with no border hassles......he's got all kinds of used muffler set ups around.....doug

Thanks! But for the insert... Last boat I sold them was a 99 Powerquest WITH silent choice..So she knows exactly what it is supposed to sound like when silent. My fault, should have never sold them the powerquest!

Nordic25, many cam profiles dictate long risers that allow water only at the very end of the riser or even dry pipes with overboard water dumps. This is to eliminate potential reversion during extended idle times. This long riser/dry setup is not possible with silent choice as the diverter is just aft of the short riser and water enters the exhaust right there making it a less than ideal choice for certain cams. I believe an HP500 is about as far as you can go into high performance motors with silent choice. Of that I'm not absolutely certain, but I do know that in the silent choice setups I'm familiar with, there are limitations on the type of engine you can use it with. There may be others, but there are absolutely some limitations. Reversion is a killer.

Kanookstr, I would love to see the switchable tips you are using that are as quiet as through hub. I've used Gaffrig, and CMI's and though they do quiet things a bit, they're no where near as quiet as through hub. My next slip over buddy has a 38' Fountain with twin HP500's and when he's switched through hub he sounds like a Sea Ray cruiser. You can hear the water ripple off his hull sides. My twin 572's with CMI mufflers closed, still sounds like thunder by comparison. It does quiet the noise a good bit, but nothing close to his. What kind of tips do you have that are so quiet ? Also, what motors are you running ? That may have a something to do with your noise reduction.

I picked up a set of teague tips. My motor is a procharged motor with CMI's. Lets put it this way, At 3500+ rpm I can whisper to my wife in the boat and she can hear me. Sure it's not as quiet as thru hub sorry if I miss led you, but It's dam close.. My wife doesn't like the loud exhaust, and she was more than satisfied with these tips... especially if you let her listen be for and after.. :p
