Merc500EFI/500Buldog

I would like to what is the difference between a 500 EFI and the 500 Bulldog, to what I know both as 470HP and what else?

Re: Merc500EFI/500Buldog

The Bulldog is a 540 Ci the 500 efi is a 502.

The bulldog is blueprinted and balanced the 500 efi is not.

The bulldog is N/A and the 500 is EFI.

The bulldog is a great motor, so is the 500 EFI just go about making 470 HO different.

Re: Merc500EFI/500Buldog

Since no one mentioned it, The bulldog was a tall deck block, the 500 EFI is a standard deck.

3 things I can think of.

1. The limitations of the Bravo One drive.

2. Wouldn't want to trump the 600SC

3. Mercury overbought HP465 cams from crane,
and needed to get rid of them  :D :D

Re: Merc500EFI/500Buldog

Bulldog motor was originally made for the military, they wanted reliable motors and that is what merc gave them with the bull dog. Overkill on the parts for the hp they made, but if you have them they are easy to bump up in hp if you want to.

I think Jaay hit it with #1 below. Remember that motor first came out in a 575hp version with TRS drive.

Re: Merc500EFI/500Buldog

Thank all for the good info, so as I can see both of them seems to be good engines.
What GPH and MPH should I expect at WOT and the middle range in a PQ 280 Silencer

Re: Merc500EFI/500Buldog

WOT about 45 GPH.
