Muffler Advice

I am in the process of redoing my bilge area and have everything out of the boat, so if I was to switch my exhaust to run external mufflers, now would be the time to do it.

I am running 800 horsepower and currently have the 4 1/2" Eddie Marine exhaust with the switchable mufflers built in.

We all spend so much money to make our boats LOUD and ok perform too, but look at all the threads "loudest boat you've ever heard" not "quietest boats you've heard".

To conform to these wonderful California sound laws, I am thinking running the external mufflers. I understand that at some launch ramps they are doing visual inspections (some old farts are usually doing them) as well as a Db test with a meter.

Any idea on mufflers that will work with this horsepower?

I am in the process of changing to external clamp-on GGB Extremes. Everything I have heard suggests these are the best out there right now.

I would take a look at the GGB's. I am sure there are others but the GGB's were my choice. With all the talk of noise restrictions, it was time to quiet things down before I received the proverbial ticket.
I am running a 540 with Keith Eickert exhaust. I stll get a nice rumble but without the crack of an unmuffled exhaust.

I posted a similar thread in the Formula forum. I am also looking for a muffler to replace the Silent Thunder Platform.

I am not as concerned to being legal but I do not want to be too LOUD either. Any recommendations for a good sound without robbing HP's from a HP525?

Who sells the GGB's?

Thanks,

Jamal

Exactly... Everyone says GGB's but who sells them and what is a good price?

Nothing coming up on a yahoo search, except OSO forums and Trick doesn't have them on their website.

Call Fred at Trick. He may be able to hook you up.
Also, ONeil Performance on this site( see his banners) has them listed.
Last week I saw some clip-on GGB's on e-bay.
I have a set and am very pleased.

Re: Muffler Advice

Has anyone tried the Livorsi Marine's Muffler Insert's?

They are advertised as lowering the decibel level by 5 to 6 and is that enough to make a thru hull exhaust not to be considered LOUD?

I am looking for a rich sounding note without sounding abnoxious or having to be legal?

I have 2 pair of GGB's 4 1/2" clamp on style for sale if your are interested.

Also, have 2 pair of CMI's 4 1/2" clamp on style with air pump.

We have GGB's in stock. Inserts, clamp-on or transom mount. We run them on most of our customers boats and have found them to be the best performers. The biggest complaint is that they are too quiet at idle.

Rumor is untrue, they are just flying under the radar and avoiding doing any direct sales. GGB is allive and well.

I have a set of GGB's. I run them full dry through CMI headers and tails, 540 n.a. I had no power loss at all. I would recommend them.

I have GGB's on my Black Thunder with 598 cu in NA 750 HP. It is much quieter now. You can talk in the cockpit in a normal tone of voice until wind noise over comes exhaust noise. My dock mates appreciated this upgrade.

Re: Muffler Advice

We've sold GGB's in the past and most of our customers have been happy. [not all].

Our current favorite is the CMI's. I just installed a pair on my Hustler and they've been a strong seller.

CMI Sound Elimination Systems mufflers are the next generation of sound reduction technology form CMI. These mufflers enable boaters to operate their performance boats in stealth mode by reducing sound emissions to levels as low as 85 decibels (dB) -- a level well below the most strict sound emission regulations. CMI's Sound Elimination Systems mufflers are designed to curtail exhaust noise emissions on any marine exhaust system with tailpipes ranging from four to six-inches in diameter, which covers the full range of inboard or stern drive-powered recreational and performance boat applications up to 1500 horsepower. The mufflers are strategically engineered to muffle sound without restricting the exhaust or creating unwanted backpressure, which can inhibit the engine from reaching peak performance power. A superior design results in fewer parts than competitive models, which will ensure long-lasting durability and reliability for marine applications.

Re: Muffler Advice

Fred, I looked on your website and saw the zoomies or whaterver they are. Would they work? I have the 800 horsepower Whippled motor and am looking at the CMI e-tops (from you of course) and am now looking at the mufflers. Which ones would handle the horsepower, be 4 1/2" and not clamp-ons.

I LOVE BOLT-ONS... LOL

Fred,
I am one of your happy GGB customers. Just curious, what were the complaints?

Has anyone tried the slip in silencers like the one from hardin marine? Pro's & Con's?

Arent there mufflers that have a variable system where they get louder as the exhaust pressure increases?

I have the GGB Extremme "Transom Mount" on my 525efi and love them. They made a big difference in the exhaust noise level without affecting the performance or top speed. Mine we installed by the dealer when I bought the boat. Shoreline Marine in VA.

Re: Muffler Advice

My motor in my 272 Baja made 944 hp (blown 540)on the dyno, boat runs almost mid 90's. I'm using stainless marine 3's with 5 inch tails adding water at very end. The boat was SO loud I could not tolerate it,the ggb clampons made it tolerable,it actually idles better and it lost NO top end. Lofty sold me the mufflers and fred also had them available at trick marine,Smitty
