I have the 182C and love it. The only thing that "kind of sucks" is that the Lake Michigan chart doesn't have any small inland lakes unless they are directly connected to the big lake. For the others you need the recreation maps for either Central or Eastern depending on what side of the lake you're on.

I just bought a 182c.Upgraded from the 162 so hopefully couple bolts and the old connectors will screw right up and i'll be done.

Re: Garmin 172C gpsmap chartplotter

Bought one last year from the GPS Store www.thegpsstore.com and it is sweet. NO problem seeing the screen in bright sunlight at all. There is a brightness adjustment and you just need to turn it up to max.
I bought the "eastern Lakes and Rivers" chip ($100) and the detail is awesome.
Would recommend this or any Garmin. I've been using their GPSs for years (handhelds, etc.), and they work well.

Hi ! I've had the 176c for about 4 years. like it, but should have bought the 182C.
One problem is you really can't follow it bouncing around going fast, so buy one with a bigger display.
Basically the Garmins are all similar , and you pay alot for a big display.
Has anyone tried interfacing a Garmin with lets say a Sony 19" lcd monitor, I've heard it can be done.
Garmin is D-Bomb ! BBB

I think the 178c has a depth sounder added which might be nice.

I have been thinking about upgradubg my 276c to this one I know its prelaoded does this mean all the charts are unlocked and how do you upgrade the charts when they are avaiable?
I am going to put it where the compass is now.
I always carry a spare compass anyway.

I've had a few Garmins over the years and no complaints. The one I liked best was the 2006C in my old boat. I just purchased this one; http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap376c/
