Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Whipple doesn't do it apparently, they want to sell me a new unit. I found PSE Superchargers on another thread. Are they the only source? Are they reputable? Anyone with some experience they could share?
Thanks! |

I'd call Teague and see what Bob recommends

Thanks Fred, that's a great idea!

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
I believe Whipple does not rebuild them because the cost to do so is almost the same as buying a new rotor housing with rotors and bolting it all back together.

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
what is wrong with it that it needs rebuilt?
|
Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
I would think it is because they don't deal with Lysholm anymore.

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Apparently after a while the seals wear out and oil leaks, both externally and internally. I was having to add oil to mine every few hours. It was weaping a bit on the outside behind the pully and when I pulled it off there was a lot of oil lying in the intake tract. Since it's on a dry FI system, there's only one place for the oil to be coming from.
I spoke to PSE Superchargers, they seem to be knowledgeable enough to be trusted. It's getting shipped off to them today. |
Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
PSE will do you a good job. I had the same oil seal problem, and they did a great job rebuilding them. I would convert them to external oiling, get oil supply from back of your block and return it to your valve cover. Eliminate the pressure in the gearset of the whipple and allow engine oil to lubricate the blower. Will run much cooler and more reliable.

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Anybody know if there is a feasible way to filter the return oil leaving the whipple to prevent engine damage in the event the SC lets go? Where is the oil typically returned on a external oiling setup. Is it returned right to the filter pad intake?

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Most return to the valve covers, but some people tap the pan and return there.

Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Update. PSE seems to be on top of it, but I'll NEVER do business with Whipple again. Seems that there are a few Whipples out there (mine being one of them) that were reconditioned and sold as new. Mine had non-original seals in it even though I bought it new, installed it myself, and had literally hundreds of hours on it.
PSE is having to have seals custom made to fit the non original dimensions of the sealing surfaces. No more money for the rebuild, but it's another two weeks to wait for the replacement seals. They will stock them from now on since the've seen several with the same problem. As these things wear, I'm sure they'll see more. If you have a Whipple that uses oil, talk to PSE Superchargers, they're developing a correct fix. Mr. Whipple can squeeze my Charmin... |
Re: Where to get Whipple's Rebuilt?
Another update -
Just got my supercharger back from PSE and I am VERY pleased with the results. Although delayed to get the seal issue resolved, the supercharger came back well packaged, clean, and obviously cared for. It seems to turn more smoothly and run quieter than when it was new. I hope I never have to, but I'd use PSE's services again without hesitation. |
