educate me on small block chevy flywheels and dampers
 

Ok I repowered from an 87 305 to an early 80-85 350. Does anyone have a casting number or part number for the flywheel I need and the damper. I have no clue when it comes to chevy and all their changes they have made. :rolleyes:

Don't know part #'s, but you need a 14" 2 pc rear main style flywheel off a 350 or any SBC besides the 400. The 400 are not truly balanced, they have a counterweight for the 400 crank. There are two common flywheels, the 14" that you need, and a 12 3/4" that you don't want. The 14" typically came on trucks. You can use any dampener from a 350.

Thanks bud, 1 other thing, would it be possible to use my old triangular coupler for the outdrive?

Yessir. The bolt pattern is the same on all SBC flywheels. Check the splines on the coupler, if they look worn at all, I'd replace since you already have the motor out.

Ok perfect, does this look like the flywheel I need. So many damn changes with chevy through the years, I cant keep up and I am a Ford guy which makes this twice as bad

You can go the junkyard route with that, but I'd look at new one, or one you know is in good shape.

Woody,
That flywheel will work fine but .... figure on taking it to a machine shop and having it surfaced before using it on the boat. Flywheel used in automotive applications get worn somewhat, even with normal use, and your coupler will not be sitting real flat on the surface. Resurfacing will probably run you around $45, so keep that in mind in you prices .... might be cheaper to get a new one. I think Pioneer has them in the $125 range.
