ITS Driveshaft & U-joints

Anyone with technical information about why mercruiser changed the driveshaft u-joint design on the Bravo 1 with ITS.
I need to replace my coupler end driveshaft on the old design but it is not sold separately, Instead you must purchase the newer design assembly with u-joints, socket and both driveshaft ends. Before I did that, I thought I should find out wether it was a strength issue or merc just changing vendors as there is an old design assembly available for about 200 bucks less.
