either that or horn at the hinge pins.... without seeing it everyone is only guessing |
Re: gimble play?
Mine has the side to side play also. Bought the kit from jrmarine and took the ring off. It did not seem that bad to me, but there was enough wear to cause the slop. Sent the ring in Monday for repair to jrmarine and should have it back by this monday.
Ron Bender has been real helpful with my problem. |
Re: gimble play?
The slop is in the distance between the the bell housing & the gimble ring. Its not side to side from slop at the top pin. Picture out-drive & off holding bell housing at trim senders and moving side to side almost 1/8" along with seeing gaps between surfaces at hinge screws. Up and down is the same???

Re: gimble play?
I see. Only thing I seen when disassembling it all was washers on each side of the bell housing. Not too thick and also not made of metal which may have worn away.
Also the hing pin bushings could be worn. Mine were a bit worn, but did not have any real slop from it. |
Re: gimble play?
If you grab the steering pin and move it side to side does the gimbal move from side to side or just a little slop? I'm going through the same thing now.

Re: gimble play?
Well I just took a better look and the steering pin is slopy also. This monster has play at every point.... That sucks

Re: gimble play?
Up and down play of the ring is controled by the nut on the upper swivel pin. There should be .05" (I think, anyone got that spec?) clearance (slop) there. I use a dime to set it. Sideways slop of the ring should be 0. If it's there, you've got a loose pin in the ring or gimbal pin bearing worn. Clearance inside the ring, at the hinge pins, should be nearly 0. Your washers may be worn or gimbal ring damaged if thats the case.

Re: gimble play?
Should you be able to move (steer) the gimble from side to side by hand when its off the boat. Or should it only be able to move side to side when hooked up to the steering cylinder and you turn the steering wheel.
