Simple fix for prop shaft play?

I'm trying to take care of some maintenance issues with my recently perchased 1994 PowerQuest with Bravo 1 outdrive.

The prop shaft has about 1/16 inch play, up and down, but not in and out. By reading some posts I figure this is not good! So before I take it to a mechanic I was wondering if there is anyway the play can his be taken out by a simply adjustment?

As most, I am concerned about being taken to the cleaners for something very simple to fix. Can anyone help me out on this. Your imput is greatly appreciated.

Up and down play is not a good thing. The lower has to come apart to see whats worn. Is it leaking oil as well?

Thanks for the replies!

Checkmate - no leaks at all. Changed the fluid late last season and not a drop of water! Seems strange, I know. Looks like it did have water at one time though, as the reservoir had a milky film in the bottom. Maybe the seals were changed out, but the problem not fixed!

Dick - if not recommended then I'm not sure that's the way to go, but I would like to hear would you have on this. Thanks, I will call you tomorrow!

Not sure what Mr Gadgets is going to recommend but my theory is a temporary fix will cost you alot more time and money than fixing it right the first time. Let's face it, AAA doesn't make offshore calls.

When I purchased the boat, they indicated the out drive had been worked on. Do you think it's possible the bearings were replaced, but they just didn't complete the job? I read somewhere about having to apply torque to 200lbs! Is it possible it just wasn't torqued to specs?

depends on the year of the drive, on early bravos they shimmed the propshaft carrier on latter models it is done with a pre load (crush ring)....

either way it will not change up/down play, more then likely you need to replace either the prop shaft or the needle brg that supports it...

Not the wonderful news I was looking for, but thanks Goodt! Sounds like a surgery date to me!

Anyone know of a good mechanic in Northwest Houston, TX? What should something like this cost to repair?

depends on if you want it done right... only way I would do it is to go through the complete lower and reseal same with upper to be on safe side ....( metal from the bearing or shaft had to go somewhere......)

1500-2500 min depending on parts needed
