circulating pump question
 

I've got a 502 mag, and i noticed last year when checking the timing that the water pump spit water out the bottom. I'm assuming this means new water pump.

Should i replace the circulating pump, or install a crossover?

If i replace the pump, is there a specific style i should go with, or is one brand better than another? It's going to be a PITA due to the proximity to the back seat, so i'd rather only do this once.

get the rebuild kit from fred, the kpm deal seems to be working great for the oso'ers that did the conversion

Only thing i can find on that site is a rebuild kit for the sea water pump. the problem i'm having is with the circulating pump on the front of the engine.

Take it off & got to your local parts house. $209 from Mercruiser seems like about $180 to much for a water pump. Unless you are a saltwater boater.

Enough people have told me to stay away from the automotive pump that i'm going to go with the boat one. I'm just going to drop the boat off at the shop next week. I'd do the water pump myself, except i'm going to have them do the drive bellows and u-joint so i'm just going to let them do it all.

Go to www.boatfix.com . They have BBC circulating pumps for 61.00 to 158.00 depending on application.
Check www.basicpower.com too.

Dave -

Good choice on not going autmotive. I believe marine pumps have a bronze impeller that does not corrode. Automotive pumps work well on closed cooling systems where you have antifreeze, which is a corrosion inhibitor.

I use a crossover because of clearance isssues with my super charger. IMHO, crossovers are a royal PITA. The stock Mercruiser cooling system does a really good job getting the oil and water temps right and keeping them there. I would do a search on crossovers on this forum before you go that route.

I have a merc BBC water pump that came off of my 502 after about 80 hours. It looks brand new and has never seen salt water. If you want it, you can have it for what it costs me to ship it. Let me know.
