Alternator Wiring
3 Attachment(s)
Just received my new alternators today and I want to mount them before I put the engines in.But when I opened the package it seams there are different wire mounting points.Does any one know where to connect the positive and the ground onto the new alternator? What are the other points for?
Please help :drink: Thanks Nordic95 |

Is this a different or newer style alternator? Why would it be different then the original?? I had a feeling you would know what to do. Thanks again, Nordic95 |

A 3 wire alternators has, guess what, 3 wires. Oh yeah, and a ground.
There's an excitation wire (purple) that goes to a keyed ignition source. It pretty much tells the alternator to turn on. There's a sensor wire (red) that attaches to the main distribution point for all 12 V unswitched sources. It reads the voltage and adjusts based on load, resistance in the wiring, etc. Then there's the main ouput wire (heavy red or orange). It connects to the starter battery post and supplys all the needed current. The connection points are shown in the earlier posts diagram and here's a typical Merc wiring seup: http://www.marinemechanic.com/site/page250.html |

1 more cable
My problem is that I have one more cable, I have the orange, the back, the purple/red, but I have one extra cable, it has a connector that looks like the one that goes on a spark plug but a lot smaller. I don't know where to put it, and it was connected on the old alternator. On some pages I read says something a connector that let's you know when the alternator stops working. I'm not sure, any ideas?
