Engine Prelubers....

3 Attachment(s)
How many of you guy's use a preluber on your engines? Better yet, who is thinking about adding one to there setup? Well, I just finished a install on Maximus and I had some custom brackets made up by a local shop. As you know, the first set is always the most expensive. I was wanting to see what kind of demand I would have for these before I order 50 to see what kinda of a deal I can give. Let me know what you guys think please.

I appreciate it! :D

That is a nice looking setup. You did a very good job.

I had the same unit on my last boat and thought it was worth the money.

However I went with the KE units on my present boat mainly because I wanted the ease of oil changes.

I can completely drain all the oil out of a warm engine in five minutes start to finish right out of the bottom of the drain pan without even getting in the boat.

Hey Doc,
That unit that you have, do you just disconnect on end and pump it into a bucket? If you use it as a preluber where does the other end connect to?

Thanks,
John :D

I installed the Marine Accusump setup (Canton) last spring with the electric valve, Very happy so far + you get to run a lower oil level in the sump which is always a plus

Hey Mark,
Do you have any pictures of your set up on your motor? I would like to see it.

Thanks,
John S. :D

I posed this question several months ago. I didn't get too many responses on the prelubers being used. I was thinking of adding one this season, but my engine builder and others have said, don't waste your money.

I have heard it said many times that 90% of the bearing wear is at start up before pressure developes, don't ask an engine builder that is taking the bread out of his mouth what answer did you expect???

So do most of the members on this site have them? It isn't that expensive of an option. If it indeeds makes a difference, I would think that more would have them.

Thanks for all the comments and pictures guys! I like to see what everyone else in the industry is doing so I can keep up with technology. Plus I always like to see how others do rigging so I can see if mine is keeping up with standards.

Thanks again,
John S. :D

Not quite the same level of rigging seen above, but the best I could do on my budget :D

I have master lubes on my boat. I was wondering how often to use them. Only when the boat hasn't been started in a month or so, or every friday after it has sat all week????

I do not use it every start. I do use it at the first start of a day and if I have been anchored for several hours. Simple just turn on the key, flip the switch and wait for oil pressure and then turn the key to start and the flip then switch back to off on preluber. You have it why not use it. I know some that use preluber with every start.

Thanks for the replys, the guy that owned the boat before me had them on. Does the Pressure in the tank need refilled often, if they are being used often.

It shouldn't, seems like the masterlube is the same system as the Accusump. With the accusump, when you are doing an oil change, you turn on the key and it allows the oil to pump out of the Unit. At that time you check to make sure that there is 5-7psi still showing on the gauge, (this pressure keeps the diaphragm seated). If it's lower you set it back using the schrader valve. This is the only time it needs checking. I have not had to adjust mine in a year.

Materlube and Accusump are pressure accumulator units as opposed to a gear driven pre-luber. The gear driven prelubers are only used prior to start-up and for oil changes. The accumulators are used for start up, but also allow you to run a lower oil level as they will top up the system any time their stored pressure is higher than the engine pressure, this function is great for racing applications as it negates oil surge issues. The other plus with accumulators is that you are basically carrying two quarts in reserve.
