I would have them resealed.....it is cheap insurance seven year-old seals not good. I would take a real close look at the Drive shaft bellows too. Ed

As far as taking them apartand inspecting them, the upper is alot like a trs just bigger, seal drivers are needed to replace the seals but just to inspect on the upper some o-rings and some perfect seal and torque specs will git-r-done. Ed

SSM #3 are a little more complicated than what you can see in the parts blow-up... they have two decending shafts that have seperate gears that need to mesh and several gears along the prop shaft. One rotataion has a "bull gear" which has teeth on two sides. The oppositer rotation has two gears with teeth on one side only. Plus you need some special tools to even take the nose cone off. Good luck. They are a pain in the butt if you don't have a stand to hold them while working on them. They are heavy and ungainly. If you don't have the manual... don't think about taking them apart. You just might "think" you are putting them back together correctly, only to have one of the small decending shafts shear because they weren't phased correctly and the load was all directed to one shaft.
If you are really tricky, and you can hold the outdrive in the correct position so that the lower gears don't fall out of position. The prop shaft can be removed while a "stand in " shaft is slid into it's place. This will hold the gears and shims in their correct order. Then the three seals near the prop can be replaced without having to totally disassemble the drive. I did this on mine. But... I also have a rotating stand and fixtures to hold the outdrive and a specially sized shaft to hold the gears.
