525 EFI Oil

A Merc guy at Miami STRESSED that I only use the Merc 25/40 oil in this motor. Local shop was selling it for 5 bucks a quart!!! Since this is a common engine, what does everyone else use? And if I have to use the Merc oil, is there an online retailer that has it cheaper?

Re: 525 EFI Oil

Once they are broken in I'd go to Mobile one 15/50 synthetic.

Re: 525 EFI Oil

I agree with Marginmn, the pressure won't drop as much when the temp goes up (extended wot).

Thanks, going to do a change soon. Rackster, did you get my email with my info for the warranties?

Re: 525 EFI Oil

We've been using Merc. oil 25/40 non-synthetic becuase they are under warranty and that is what Merc. says to use. We buy it from West Marine it's like $2.

Some people say the Mobil 1 synthetic is too slippery for the cam.

We have also been using Merc. oil filters and they have having problems with them collapsing so be careful with them if you use the Merc. Oil Filter.

Have you had any problems with the oil filters?

I assume you are using the tall Merc race fliters?
And you are having probs with them?

Yes, we are using the tall filter and had a problem. Mech's at TNT said this is a Merc. problem and have seen it before. However, once we changed the filter the oil pressure went right back up where it was suppose to be :drink:

What about using the painted black and relabled short ones? any problems with them?

Re: 525 EFI Oil

Mercury 25W-40 is a blend of conventional 25W and 40W oil and tests show the Cst's are comparable at 100*C to a 40 Straight Weight conventional and similiar as well to 20W-50 Castrol or Kendall GT. So any of the three are good conventional choices.

Unsane, I sent the info to you the same day I received your email. You should see it today or tomorrow.

Re: 525 EFI Oil

I had a minute to talk with Merc today about another issue. I also discussed their 25W-40 oil with them.

The big concern they have is that a non-experienced individual might go out and purchase an "off the shelf automobile" 10W-40 with low ZDDP levels and incur a problem.

They are aware that racers of Mercury Engines use products such as 20W-50 Amsoil Severe Service Racing Synthetic with great results. But it just does not have a Merc part number on it is all.

There was a time when A/C made filters for Merc I understand. The A/C oil filter is excellent in flow and filtering...they are cheap too...about $3.99 ea.

I actually think I would use them myself becasue they are easy to get and trouble free. The bypass valve works very well too. They are well made filters.

Merc racing and Fram's look similiar I understand.

A/C has better parts than a Fram I think.

The graph below is from Bob's site...most prefer an A/C on a GM block engine. There must be a reason and it is probably because they are cheap and a very good match.

Anyone using them?

Re: 525 EFI Oil

I changed my oil today on my 525efi. The filter is upside down so when I remove the filter it makes a little mess. I noticed that when the filter was removed there is a grove about a half inch deep in the base of the mount. This was filled with a sludge. not gritty like metal but just thick. Any ideas? always used mobile one 15/50

Re: 525 EFI Oil

I used 15-50 Mobil 1 for years prior to Hydraulic roller cams & the new formulas. Not sure how the new formula effects the oil.

I now use Valvoline 40w racing oil due to the Hydraulic rollers. Teague published a article about not using synthetic on these so I switched to this and it seems to be as good as Mobil 1 at half the cost. Engines are very clean and not much wear.

Just works for me.
