need engine alignment help

I just replaced a coupler on a boat.it has regular engine mounts.
I am trying to align the engine.I can get the alignment tool to go in but I have to push a little to get it in.
If I greased the tool and slide it in and pull it straight out I can see at what spot the splines of the coupler hit the tool.
If you are looking at the transom the splines the make contact with the tool are 3 to 6 o'clock.
My question is do I want to raise that side engine mount or do I raise the other side??
how easy should the alignment do go in ?
thanks for any help

Re: need engine alignment help

adjust the mount oppisite to where you see the marks remember the rear mounts act as a pivot/fulcrum

Hi boatnt. You shouldn't try and do it side to side. What you need to do is lift the engine from the front mount in the middle. I don't know what motor setup you have but it is a bunch easier to Align the gimbal bearing with the crankshaft if you lift from the center front of the motor. or just find two lifting areas on both heads and lift evenly.

Best Regards Phil.

Oh don't forget after you support the engine, loosen the four nuts that you've been adjusting.

Best Regards Phil

no offence but that makes no sense unless Im reading it wrong, if one mount is off how does this help, unless you are starting at square one trial and error, but he already knows which way he has to go

I dont dout you just after doing this for a very very long time dont see it working, im always open to new ideas

I've been doing it that way since 1984. merc even sells lifting tools for alignment. You can do it either way. I just can't see going from side to side when you can just lift the front of the engine, loosen the adjusting nuts and go up or down till the alignment tool go's in easy.

Best Regards Phil
