XR Drive Help
Heys guys,
I finally got to hear my new motors today in the boat, only five months of solid work, not bad.But here are the two problems I now have. 1) Used my Imco back plate from my old drives and tried putting them on my new XR's.They bolted right up bu the Imco plate has two more holes then the standard back plate.I looked in all the manuals and all the stock pictures show 3 bolts and these have five.Does Imco have you drill and tap the other two?I would think since now there is a lot of pressure from the steering rams.I am scared to drill into two brand new XR's. 2) I tried using my tie bar and mounting saddles but since the new XR's have a sloped face the saddles sit at an angle facing away from the back of the boat.I didn't try the drives up and down to see if they would bind yet. Will this work?Or is there a different saddle I need to use? Also does any one know where to get the plastic wear guide that snaps onto the drive where the gimble ring rubs?I checked a few Merc.parts suppliers and they dont list it. Thanks Nordic95 |
Re: XR Drive Help

Re: XR Drive Help
The extra 2 mounting holes on imco cap for hyd steering are definately needed. I have used a transfer punch that slid thru the hole snugly and made a indent then carefully drilled it. Sorta like drilling holes in your transom for hydraulic ram mounts, you only get one chance so just be careful,Smitty

Re: XR Drive Help
Imco includes a drill bit that has a smaller dia section on the tip the proper length when you buy the caps. Call Imco and they will surely sell you one. You bolt the cap on and drill until you see the larger dia just start to cut. That will give you the proper depth. Then blow out the chips and tap it using the cap as a guide. I press a 3/8" nut on the end of the tap and use a ratchet and extention to get to it. There is some interferance, but it works very well. And dont forget to use longer bolts in the top two holes, the stock Merc ones are a bit short..
Hope this helps Dick |
Re: XR Drive Help
Dick,
I took your advice and called Imco. They sent me the stepped drill bit and it worked like a charm. And I used you idea with the 3/8 nut and the tap, also worked like a charm.Thank you very much for your ideas,I was very nervous about drilling a couple of stupid holes but it seems to have worked. Thanks you very much Nordic95 |
