Oil Temp Alarm!
 

Hi Everyone,

I was running in the Ft Myers Poker Run last weekend. Starboard motor oil temp alarm went off so I immediately shut it down. Oil pressure dropped to ~23 psi. Motors are 525's still under warranty, 120 hours with oil change prior to poker run. Checked oil cooler which was cold, checked oil level was good, no shavings on the dip stick, restarted engine oil pressure at ~25 psi at idle, oil temp ~220, brought boat on plane "gently" after 5 minutes oil temps getting high again shut it down for the day.

I'm told could be oil thermostat is bad.

Mechanic got into it, started motor, oil pressure at 40 psi, removed filter and checked for shavings, found none. Having oil analyzed. Mechani changed oil and got 60 psi oil pressure, same as port engine. Next step is to put engine under load and see what happens.

Hopefully bearings are not fried. Any thoughts out there on other items to check?

You most likley had a bad oil filter, as long as you didn't lose pressure completely you should be ok. I've seen it afew times and knock on wood everytime the motor was fine, good luck keep us posted...

Buy or borrow an infrared heat measuring tool. That way you can compare motors, coolers, lines etc. and see if oil thermostat is working

if you have ever lost an impeller on that motor, have them back flush the oil cooler to make sure there is no blockage on the water side

525 ? shouldn't it go into safe mode with that alarm ??

How can a oil filter cause High Oil Temp?

An oil filter that may be plugged or bad won't flow oil causing to get bypassed through the engine, which also bypasses the oil cooler.

I imagine that the alarm sounded at 220 to warn him and he shut down, safe mode was soon after i'm sure.

Thanks for all the info,

The Oil Temp alarm went off, not the engine temp. Oil temps run from 240-260 normally. My temp guage was pegged when the alarm went off ~340. I had the oil changed just prior to this happening, so bad filter is a good possiblity. Everyone burns impellers, I backflush everything including oil cooler. It was also checked after this happened and was totally clean.

I'm not sure how the safe mode works for the 525 with respect to oil temps. Sounds like a good question for Mercury Racing.
