Oil temp question
I just put the boat in the water this weekend after installing oil temp guages over the winter. Im not sure where my oil temps should be I run castrol straight 40 in the motors 454 n/'a no major mods with no oil coolers. my oil temps after the 1st run at normal cruising speed were at about 230* and at holding at wot for about 10 seconds it would jump to 260 * and stay there, water temps are at 140* where should my temps be ? am I ok or are these too high??
thanks Brad. |

Re: Oil temp question
I would say you need a oil cooler. Temp are in high end but syntetic oil will survive much more heat than mineral oil

Re: Oil temp question
Dennis Moore states that full warm and running, oil temps from 230 to 270 F. is the desired range. Anything over 212 F. will get rid of the unwanted condensation and combustion water products. And full synthetic oils will handle up to 300 F. without loosing the necessary lub. qualities. But, if you plan to do much hard running, I agree that it be would well worth your while to add that oil cooler. Matter of fact; I have a 454 Mag. combo cooler that I updated to larger when I went to the built 540. You could have it real cheap. (Maybe $50 + shipping?) --- Jer

Re: Oil temp question
I went through the same deal last year with oil temps. I spent the money and bought a hardin combo cooler. My temps didnt change much at all running but would cool down much faster with the bigger cooler. I switched to Mobil v-twin and my temp stays around 250-270 running hard. There is a bypass valve that has to be changed to make a big difference. Articfriends has a long thread about this.
