Whoever said coupler wins, apparently.

Shop called today, said it needs a coupler and an output shaft, $1500-$1700 to get-r-done, should be ready next week.

I'm kind of surprised, i didn't see any evidence that it let go, but of course i couldn't really test it myself before i dropped the boat off.

Next time test the coupler under a load, not on the trailer.

Hopefully there won't be a next time.

But point taken. I knew when i checked it that it wasn't a completely valid way to test it.

Is that using that coupler changer through the bell housing tool? Man, I gotta see one of those things. Make sure the job includes aligning the engine after the new coupler goes in. Last thing you want is to do this again in about 10 hours.

What happened to the output shaft to need a new one? Usually the shaft eats the coupler, sort of like rock smashes scissors.

Good luck.

I'm going to ask to see the old parts, obviously. Based on the sound i heard, i suspect that the splines in the coupler let go and fubared the splines on the shaft.

They're pulling the motor to install the coupler. I don't think the coupler would fit through the bellhousing.

I did ask them if they would be aligning the motor after installing the coupler. They had the motor out last year to rebuild it, it's been about 70 hours since then, so i'm hoping it didn't go to crap because they were lazy when they put it in. New management at the place now, though.

The next thing you need to do is find out why it's so slow plaining off. I have the same boat and power in the shop right now and its running a Mach 1 LH 23p prop and plains off very fast. This boat has no mods.

Maby whoever changed the u-Joints forgot the spline grease

Re: What broke in my outdrive?

There was grease on the splines.

I have a 1.36 ratio drive and i'm spinning a 21" prop. The boat had a 19" prop on it when i got it, and planed faster, but i was running a little over 5200 at WOT. I actually picked up speed when i borrowed a 23" prop... i picked up 2 mph even though the motor was only spinning to 4200 RPM. With the 21" it gets on plane okay, the big tabs (martiniboat style, custom fabricated though) help a lot, but if i have a full load on the boat (the day it broke i had 4 people and full fuel) it doesn't exactly hop on plane. I want to try a 4 blade prop in the 20" range, but my budget calls for a used prop and i haven't seen any pop up.

The gear ratio is hurting you,if ya get a chance to change back to a 1.50 I would !!!

The hub could of been run dry then lubed after it was to late. Mine was fixing to go out ,you can see the splines are T-ped to a sharp point fixing to fail.I was told in a previous thread this is from the lack of grease .The engine was aligned
