Welding of TRS gear housing

I would like to know if anybody has successfully TIG welded a crack in the torpedo area of the gear housing.

Is it more advantageous to use a filler, if yes what kind of spezification is available.

Are you using argon gas or a combination of argon helium.

I believe flushing the opposite side of the welding seam with gas helps a lot.

Thanks

I havent welded a trs houseing but have done alot of aluminum castings keeping it clean like all aluminum is the key argon works fine. argon/ helium is used when you are welding verticle or overhead, the lighter than air thing, grind it out good keep it clean and always use a filler when you weld just fuseing it together you will be looking at a stress crack at the toe of the weld in a short time. keep it as cool as possible (warpage) weld 1/2 to3/4 inch at a time and use a wet rag to quench it. putting an argon back purge does work great( Keeping it clean thing ) good luck you should be fine Ive done quite a few repairs on merc and volvo drives Oh any filler for aluminum will work outdrives are just cast nothing exotic in them (that i know of) yet

Re: Welding of TRS gear housing

What caused the crack? If you've broken a gear, dropped a vertical shaft, had a bearing fail or a combination of the above your housing is likely trashed. If the housing has been deformed it will no longer maintain correct spacing in the gears. This will cause another lower failure. I've seen the housings welded before for various reasons and the end result is the same. Heating from welding may cause the housing to shift. If you can't find a replacement lower housing i would suggest you talk to someone like TNT about welding yours.

I'd hate to see you spend time and money on parts just to have the whole lower fail and destroy the hard to find TRS parts.

I have a buddy that was a Navy welder I have watched him weld a few cases, he submerges the case in water leaving only the area to be welded above the surface. He says he has done very well using that procedure.
