Steel cam gear/soft distributor gear/ cold(thick) oil = what you see.

I had the same problem with a Sterling engine. Just quit suddenly and wouldn't start. Lost several teeth off the gear. Make sure you check the cam for damage too. I have some damage to the teeth on the cam and had to replace it, too.

what oil do you use? and what was the air temp when you had the problem?

I cant remember but is that the dist. with the adjustable collar on it? You also may want to take off the orings for test purposes and see if the dist. is in the correct location. If its not bottomed out on the collar with no gasket then that could be the culprit also. Check check check!
