The header and intake are 3/8 which most say 35 TQ. Just back off then retouqe.Just remember that the hardware store bolt might be a lower grade even being a garde 5 compared to a name brand bolt.On the chart See the 170-180-psi bolt will be a lot stronger bolt than the hardware bolt.

Dean Gellner Engineering recommends using a stud with a nut.. that way you have two forces of keeping the header tight.

Have used stainless bolts on aluminum manifolds and headers for years, never any problems.

I saw a lot of problems with rust on boats that had steel bolts. Most of the time the heads would rust out and you had to hammer a smaller socket on it or a 12 pt. metric socket if you were lucky. In one instance I had to use a sledge hammer to break the manifold so we could get it out. :eek:

Another huge load of B.S.
Use the ARP Stainless Bolts for headers. When you really get used to fasteners you get a feel for them and thier particular application ,(it's not a head gasket ) and understand their limits as well, if not then you haven't done enough motors.
Have had good luck with the 5/16 headed ARP 3/8 - 16 header bolts. After running and warming up, a good re- tightening is all they need.
You need a 3/8 " Drive ,deep socket that is necked down for for them and a normal 3/8 ratchet tightened to max with one hand.
With the CMI headers I have used these as described and have had no problems in 2 years with 4 motors.
Another thing is to coat the gaskets with anti-sieze compound before install. Believe it or not they really do work well. Try it on a carb gasket too.

Thats what I used on My CMI's, the ARP SS Studs. I checked them a few times after the intial install and none loosened up at all. Haven't touched them in a 100hrs.
