97 502/415 Cam Change
 

I am thinking of a cam change in my 502 mpi. already have the top end off for its 200 hr freshening up. However not enough room in front of the motor for the cam to slide out. Is there any magic to pulling the motor out? Is there a way to do it without needing to worry about alignments on the reinstall? Any step by step info would be great guys...

CAn your boack seat be pulled out?

In my boat there is a firewall. then a dry storebox under the seat. The seat can be pulled out and a hole saw would bbe able to cut a path for the cam ..however this boat is just like it left the factory so I was a bit hesitant to do this ... but if last option then may think about it. Use standard hole size then place rubber gromits

If you pull the motor out and leave the motor mounts attached to the boat it should remain lined up. You still should check it though. Mark every wire you disconnect because you will forget where they go....

Yea... And there is plenty of wires on these motors as well :-) I am taking lotsa close up pictures as well

Pull the engine out to change the cam. I changed the cam on my 1999 7.4MPI in the boat and it was a PIA. You have to drop the oil plan on a Gen VI engines to get the timing chain cover off.
You are on the right track by taking lots of pictures. Pull the drive first because you will not get the spline shaft back in the coupler when you reinstall the engine.

Thanks for the info Pat.. probably a good time to put fresh bellows and stuff in to ... amazing how this keeps growing :-)
