502mpi / 502efi
Excuse this stupid question, I was always reading about the 502MPI and just found a 500EFI.
What is the difference between these two motors and witch one is the best.
Thank you

Re: 502mpi / 502efi
do you mean 502mpi vs 502efi or 500efi??????
502MPI is a black merc engine, 502ci and 415hp. 502EFI is basically the same thing but an earlier version of the fuel injected engine. Might even be the same thing with a name change.
500EFI is a blue merc racing engine, 502ci and 500hp.

Re: 502mpi / 502efi
The early ('93 to '94) 502's were Multi-Port Injected (MPI) but were called 502 Magnum EFI.
In 1995 they started calling the MPI engines (including the 502) EFI/MP.
Starting in 1996 all MPI engines were called MPI and throttle body injected engines were called EFI.
You may want to try to get a 1998 (actually 1997 1/2) or later 502. Thats when they dumped the Vapor Seperator Tank (VST) and went to the "Cool-Fuel" system.
