GGB Muffler Failure

I had Graham at GGB build a custom set of Extremes with down tubes last year. They worked great until this weekend. A wield let go and one muffler is gone. Anyone seen this happen before?

Man, I really hate to see that. Sorry to hear about your failure.

I just put GGB's on this season and have been very pleased with them.

Looked at mine this weekend and they look great.

That looks like a very clean failure on yours.

Are you using a seperate pickup down there on the left for your innercooler? I have been trying to figure out where to put one on my boat being its only a single like yours and I don't want to do anything to screw up the water flowing acrossed the transom that would affect top speed,Smitty

Yes it separate, I installed it and blocked off the out drive P/U. My main P/U is directly opposite. I picked up 1-2 mph this way. I was having water burn problems on the lower drive and holes were burning into the drive behind the P/U at high speed. All is good now.

My neighbors boat did the same thing. Graham took care of it right away. I'd try to get in touch with him. If you have no luck, try Lofty here on the board. He might be able to help you.

Graham's whereabouts are unknown. Lofty is trying to help, but he is out of the country, and has no 4.5" clamp-ons in stock. For now I ordered the new CMI's from Fred. Lofty may be able to make me a new one but that’s a month away. When it happened I thought Graham would take care of it, but now I'm just out another grand instead. :(

I guess I'm no longer the only one that got screwed over by Graham.

I remember your troubles. At least he was in business at the time. I can't even yell at him.

His business was in the corner of a warehouse outside of Burkes Falls Ontario. I beleive his father and brother own a muffler shop there, maybe try directory assistance. I used to have his cell number I'll see if I can find it.

Dave,
I have never seen such a clean break! That looks like it was cut and flared on purpose like that. The picture is not that detailed, does it look like there was any penetration on the end by the weld? Or was it just a cold weld? My extremes still look great. No problems to report. I wonder if yours failed simply because of the extra load generated by those turn downs? Will your new CMI's have those same turn downs?

Vinny

Why would you have a muffler and a turn down? The turndown should muffle any motor to pass the dba meter. I see a few of you have them, enlighten me please.

There is a lot of stress on a turn down when you re-enter the water so it's not suprising to see that failure if you're attaching a turndown to a muffer.

CMI has made several sets for us and that why they custom bend them and don't segment/weld them.

If you need assitance or a set of turndowns by CMI, we can help.

Re: GGB Muffler Failure

They wields look to be of poor quality. Just a few spot welds around the edge the rest looks like it was not wielded. The new CMI's have no turn downs. It's not offered.

I have the mufflers with turn downs to get under 88dbs. It was at 85db. Also at speed it was very quite. I have small children and big noise is not an option. It was fun as a sleeper boat. No one had any idea until it was too late. :D

Now I understand :D :D

I just wonder how much HP loss you experience with a muffler and a 90 elbow though.

Re: GGB Muffler Failure

Honestly I lost nothing. It ran over 100 all day long before and after. I really liked this setup. Unfortunately it's gone for now. I hope the CMI's are as good. I'll know this weekend. :drink:

BTW it only had 45* turndowns.

They seem to be falling apart. Might be the reason GGB is MIA. Anybody know where I can get just one?

Looks like your screwed, just like me. No one has them.

You’re not going to believe this. I lost the muffler in the Hudson River last year. It’s reasonably deep and visibility is rarely over two feet. Since I could have lost it anywhere within a mile long stretch I never looked for it.

A week ago I pulled up to the island and my buddy has my long lost muffler in his hands. He found it diving just 30' from where we anchor. A local welder is fixing it and reinforcing the welds so I never lose it again. I'm still in shock, it was down there for 12 months on looks like new.

Like I've always said, I'd rather be lucky than good.:drink:

Talk about lookin for a needle in a haystack. Good for you, I'm glad to see you got it back. I've got mine safety wired on. But, I guess if the weld breaks, the safety wire won't help at all.
