V-8 Repower in Sea Ray Pachanga

Hello:

I am in the process of repowering my Pachanga from a Merc 165 (inline 6) to a Merc 225 (327 V-8). My question(s)
concern(s) the Merc #1 drive that is on the boat. Will I need to use a larger diameter pickup hose and fittings for the V-8. I was told that the drive should be able to handle the power but of course the gear ratios and/or prop will need to changed. Anything else I might need to be aware of?

Thanks for your help!

Jack

Re: V-8 Repower in Sea Ray Pachanga

This must be an old Pachanga. I never knew they made one with a 6 banger

Unless you already have the 327 it would be much easier to use the 350 along with more power.

I dont understand your other question
Will I need to use a larger diameter pickup hose and fittings for the V-8

I would not put any money it that drive. Just prop up to a bigger size. If you change the ratio to like 1.5 you will still need to buy a different prop.

Enjoy. Alot of smart people on this board.
Register spend the $$$ so you can post a picture of this clasic boat :D

Re: V-8 Repower in Sea Ray Pachanga

My Pachanga is a 1970 model. The first Pachangas were made from 69-71 (about 500 units) or so. There were quite a few with the Olds 455/Berekley Packajet setup. My boat was exclusively made for a fellow named H.A. Pries (so says the Sea Ray dash plaque) and ordered with the inline 6 and may have been the only one made in blue gelcoat.

I should have explained about pickup hose. i was referring to the drive's raw water pickup. The hose diameter going from the transom plate to the circulating pump housing is I believe 5/8. Will this flow enough water for the V-8?

I have already purchased a complete period correct 327 marine engine which I am getting rebuilt (the Mercruiser 225).

Here's a link to my boat on Sea Ray's website you can cut and paste in your browser:
