Stroke Me!!!

Get your mind outta the gutter.
At the crossroads here and need some input. I have a choice of just going with the blocks I have. Salt water exposed for apprx 8 years. Religiously flushed and appear in decent shape. Going with Dart 345 cc heads marinized and hardened exh seats. All and all for another $10K I can go with a new Dart block all new internals & pondering the thought of stroking it. Leaniing towards dependability cause I'm just getting too damn old to be doing this. Money is no object and I want naturally aspirated engines. Any thoughts on what stroke etc etc ?

make your HP with cobuc inches, get a 572 or simmilar and build it mild, easier to make reliable power....

Re: Stroke Me!!!

What would be a "reliable" horspower range & the largest cube to go with ? Definetly going with a roller cam with a Dart single plaine intake manifold. With all of this it will definetly be dynoed.

What cam spec's, carburation, and exhaust are you running ? They look like some nice #'s. Are you running GM blocks ?

4.375 stroke, 6.735" rods, 1.27"cd, dart 345 heads, used an eldebrock victor insted of dart intake, just did a comp and the eldelbrock makes more tq and cheaper, spend savings at Wilson manifolds blueprinting intake, BLP carb, and crane hyd roller will make 750hp at 5500, good luck ,gg

well my engine the 510 is a 1993 merc 502 390hp . in 2001 after top end only mods which made 592hp and 580tq I put in new ISKY CAM HDY ROLLER, MERLIN 310 HEADS MARINE, NEW PISTONS 9.5 TO 1 CRANK RODS PISTONS BALANCED MATCHED DART INTAKE, 850 BG CARB GOING TO NICKERSON 1050 S/M DRY HEADERS, A LITTLE loud :p MSD EVERYTHING . I HAVE BEEN THE OCEAN ONLY FLUSH, HEADERS ARE 1994 :D CARB 1994 :D MSD :( 1995 JUST DIED GETTING NEW BOX THIS WEEK :( THIS THING MAKES THE 650HP

Stan, Not sure if you had already considered this or not, but if you're thinking about going from short deck to tall deck blocks, then you'll need to think about getting new tailpipes to fit the existing holes in your transom. Also, the center to center engine clearance may be an issue as well.

If you stay with a short deck block, then a 565cid (4.25" stroke x 4.600" piston with a 6.385" rod) engine would probably be about your limit for cubic inches.

Art, thanks for the good info. Very interested in the 598 ci #'s.
What do you have for drives & props ?

Definetly staying with short deck. As you said with the tail pipe height, I'm not messing with the transom. Is 565 the max ci on a short deck ?

Already spent the coin for the Dart's and have been marinized. I went with the Dart 345 cc head's with the water passages coated as well. Checked with Dart & they do not offer the coating for the blocks which sucks. Any speacs on this cam & is this proven dyno specs ?

Contact RMBuilder here on OSO.
He can spec/sell you the right cam for your application.

With 345cc heads and if you are planning to keep the rpm around or under 6K, theh you need inches. I would consider a 4.375" stroke and either a 4.560 bore with OEM block or 4.600" with an after market. This would get you either a 572CID or a 582CID. Just had a customer with this 572 combo and OEM 990 heads make 680HP and 655#/ft of torque.

Chris

This is pretty much what I'm after. Quite impressive getting the horse from the 990 heads. As far as a roller cam any suggestions on lift, duration, centline etc ? Would like to keep it under 700 horse. The SM exhaust I ordered are good up to 700 I believe.

Re: Stroke Me!!!

Stan once the engine combination has been settled on and an rpm range to run in along with some flow numbers off of the heads then a camshaft can be decided on. You've got alot of runner volume there so if it were me I would go as large as possible for sake of throttle response. A good hyd roller with the Morel Marine lifters would be an excellent choice or for a little more power go a tight lash solid roller with the pressure fed Morels.

Re: Stroke Me!!!

1/4" stroke and 345cc heads will leave alot of tq on the table unless your going to turn 6500+, did a 4.56x4.25 with a set of 325 i hade and didnt like it. I believe 310 with 2.25 valve on 4.25 stroke is the ticket for < 6000rpm.

Stan, I'm no expert here, but I think if you go beyond 4.25" stroke on a short deck block it will have exessive wear problems on the cylinder bores.

Also, a 345cc head is kind of large for a 565cid engine although it will work, but as gg10 said you will leave a lot of torque on the table. However, being that you already own the heads now, you do have an option---you can send them to "JimV" and have him install some of his wedges in the ports and make the port smaller and bring back a bunch of torque and power for your cubic inches----so, you CAN make them work for you. If you have any questions you can call JimV's cell at 616-889-0928.

JimV works closely with "rmbuilder" aka Bob Madara of Marine Kinetics from N.Y. Bob's number is 585-654-8583. A word to the wise,....I would DEFINATELY call Bob BEFORE you make any final descisions on cam selection!

Have fun with your project!

Oh, by the way....my name is Mark. "Dave" Wesseldyk is the owner of WESCO Racing---he's the guy who built my 565cid engines, Bob Madara supplied the hydraulic roller cams, and JimV did some port massaging on my AFR cnc ported heads and I am very pleased with how everything has turned out!

Stan,
I second Mark's recomendation on getting with Bob Madera. Great running engines don't have to have great parts, they have to be great combinations. Bob can give you invaluable information on performing combinations and parts.

Re: Stroke Me!!!

Out of curiosity where did you end up?

My personal feeling is that the 345's are too large for the small-ish combo and low RPM. Hard to swallow swapping them but it's easier to do it now than down the road.I'm wondering how these were decided on - If money was no object what drew you away from the 335's?

4.250 x 4.600 is an easy build for this one - 565 cubes and easily sourced components.

Hello Chris, weird palces we find ourselves huh? :drink:

Decided we will throw the old stuff together for now just to get a few weeks out of the season. Will do this as a winter project so there is no rush. Alot of good options and we may go tall deck.
