Prop-Lock "Keys" . . . .
 

I keep a couple cooler cups in the 'glove-box' in my boat. Same place I keep my prop-lock "keys" ( the cylindrical type that fits over the prop-shaft ). I took out one of my cooler cups during cleaning, and the key dropped into the water, next to my boatlift.

First off ( since I haven't checked ) do the keys in a set ( purchased as a set of two ) typically match ? ?

If not, how best to remove the lock that now has no key ? ? ?

I used a screwdriver (or a punch) and a hammer to turn mine

IT SUCKED A LOT

but it got it loose enough that I was able to get in there with some needlenose and turn them off the shaft

I have both a set for the props and drives, McGards. Same key for each.

At this point in my life, I am trying to avoid things that "SUCK A LOT" as much as possible.

I guess one of these days I'll go and try the other key, just for laughs. Hoping that it matches up . . . . yeah right.

I've removed my mcguard prop lock by using a bench grinder on a socket to thin the edge. Then look closely at the lock and grind the edge of the socket into points where needed to match the lock . Then hammer it into the lock and remove. Actually worked pretty well if you don't mind destroying a socket and the lock. Start to finish was maybe 5 minutes.

If you still have the key #, Mcguard will send you another key.
If not, you can take a hammer and chisel, and hit the outer ring straight in from the rear. The outer ring will splitt off. The internal brass nut can now be removed with a set of vise grips.

I keep mine in the truck,you can describe it to the Mcgard guy or take a pick he can recognize it, they don't make that many different styles I found out.
