Re: carb jetting on a hp 500

I had a stock HP500 carb in my 2000 29 Fountain when I owned it. I kept it stock except for advancing the timing to 36 degree. This gave better acelleration. I was playing around with putting in a spacer but did not want to go through with having to re-do the fuel lines. The engine ran a little rich and I was told I could lean it out some but it's better to run a little rich than lean.Maybe jet down 1 size would have done the trick. Also I wanted to put CMI or Stainless Marine exhaust manifolds on because those Gil's are horrible. I'm no engine guru so hopefully others that know way more will reply to you.

Id like to hear more.. I have 2000 HP 500's carb and they run great except for one motor is hard to start when warm and doesn't idle as well. Im thinking thats just an adjustment. Why are the Gil's horrible?

Remove air cleaner and you will see 8 small air ports on top of the carb. Shoot some carb cleaner into these air ports & shoot out with a little compressed air. My motor guy calls this a case of the "Fuzzies". (I use a key board compressed air bottle) The other thing I would check is the timing on that motor, make sure its good an warm. I have my Stroked 500HPs at 34 Degress and time at 3500 RPM. I do not know where stock 500HPs are supposed to be??? Hope this helps :D
