Question about matching trailer to boat
 

Looked at a top gun the other day, noticed the trailer bunks, the part the boat actually touches, did not come all the way out to the back of the transom, in fact it was about 3' from the back of the boat.

My understanding is the boat transom area must sit on the trailer and be well supported or you risk damaging the hull.

Is this correct?

How do you match trailer to boat as far as length goes?

they should pass the transom by about a 1/4 inch if they are short of the transom they can cause a "hook" in the bottom

Joe is right; I took a 32'Spectra on trade for one of my old boats -- it had sat on a trailer with short bunks for about 2 years and sure enough there was a slight hook.- Jeff

I just bought a 1991 31' Scarab Excel without a trailer in LA. (I live in SF) I got a great deal on a Myco trailer that held a 1994 32' fountain Fever. I'm sure I'll have to modify the Bunks to fit the Scarab. I'd like to do it before I drive all the way down there to get the boat.
Would anyone happen to know who/where I could contact to get the hull measurements so I could re-located the bunks before I go?

These two boats also have differnt deadrise. I believe the Scarab is 24 degrees and the fountain is 22 or 23. Might be enough to cause Scarab to ride on the edge of the bunk. I would contact Myco, They may be able to send corrected parts in advance of you going for the boat.

Myco only builds custom welded trailers, with bunks welded to the frame. The only ways I know to adjust them is to reweld the bunks in the new locations, or replace the wood on the bunks with custom-cut wood. If the deadrise is different, then you may be able to rip the new bunk boards on a few degree angle to match the hull. Or add angled spacers under the bunks on the bunk supports. Either way, you are going about it right by doing it before putting the new boat on the trailer.

Oh, last time I talked with Myco, they were helpful on the phone, but did not do any rehab work in the factory. Too full building new trailers. But, they may have the dimensions of your new boat's hull in their data base.

3 feet? :eek: Not good. Sounds lke the trailer from another boat.

If 3 inches, perhaps you can move the winching tower forward to get the hull fully supported.
