oil lines and oil coolers

Who has good after market oil lines and oil coolers? Looking to replace stock stuff. Thanks.

Re: oil lines and oil coolers

Is it a Mark 4, or Gen 5 or 6 motor?

I am removing gen 5, and going back with gen 6.

Since you dont need the filter bypass in the Mark 4 "coffee can" oil filter adapter, you can get all aftermarket stuff.
On my last Gen 5 motors, I bought aftermarket adapters and remote filters. Then I made my own S/S AN lines and used NPT to AN adapters on the fittings.
Any aftermarket stainless hose is going to be better than the merc ones, and you dont have to deal with the oddball inverted flare hoses they use.

Keep in mind the temperature rating of the hose.

Re: oil lines and oil coolers

For hose, I would agree with GOODT. If you dont care about the pretty stainless braided hose and aluminum ends, you can use rubber coated hose and brass ends for a third the price.
They even have Push-Loc that is rated for those temps and pressures.
BTW, the bigger Merc oil coolers (ie 500hp) are fine for most applications. But once again, you can get the pretty chrome plated aftermarket brass ones for a few bucks more.

Re: oil lines and oil coolers

i have a 365 mag motor that has been reworked. i threw out the little oil cooler that comes stock and bought a combo p/s-engine oil cooler from revolution marine. it's 3" in dia. and about 20inches long. my motor has about 15hrs.on it,and i am pleased with the cooler. it's also very reasonably priced. i used a cloth braided rubber hose from good year that was rated at 300psi and 300 deg. temp. brass push-lock fittings were easy to deal with, and were rated for a ton of pressure.good luck.

dean - try a search for AN and or oil lines. smitty or KAMMA, or someone, did a great thread on the subject. Damn...I can't remember who done it  But it is a must read if you're going to get nto changing oil lines. VERY informative.

Re: oil lines and oil coolers

btw..stock merc oil lines and fittings are just BARELY 3/8 in. ID, at least on the black motors. Not enough ID for say 500 hp. Oil temp gauge will tell you that.

Re: oil lines and oil coolers

A good guideline for oil line size:
N/A 454 to 502 use the #10 hose/fittings
N/A 540 and up use the #12 hose/fittings
Any blower motors use the #12 hose/fittings

I do agree on the oil and water lines. If you don't care about showing off those in stainless, then use the push-lok stuff. Go with the good automotive stuff (Russell, XRP, Aeroquip), and you can save money. Jeg's and Summit Racing.
Fuel lines should be the stainless with the proper fittings. Not that hard to install if you take your time.

I do have a pair of Teague remote oil filter units that mount on the BBC head, in powder coat purple (all new, in the box), will sell cheap.

I remember that tread too and I am pretty sure it was Smitty---he's a pretty knowledgable guy!

I have a large, aftermarket one I was going to put on my 540cu in. for reassurance. Before I could, boat was sold. Still have it; brand new and don't want to mess with sending it back. Email if [email protected]
