Thermostat or not?
Thermostat or not?
I live in Florida, so cold weather isn't much of a problem :D But, really, the question is: Do I really need to run with a thermostat? What are the pro's and con's? |
Re: Thermostat or not?
I hear the race boats run without.....

Re: Thermostat or not?
If you are running a SuperCharger and the engine can cook the moisture out of the oil...your fine without one.

Re: Thermostat or not?
I prefer sea strainer and t-stat, however as stated above, if you are able to get about 140 water temp and sufficient oil temp of at least 180 then there is probably no reason to worry if it's a carb motor.
If it's injection motor then you should run the correct t-stat. |
Re: Thermostat or not?
I should've posted that they are carb motors. It turns out that the port engine hasn't had a t-stat in years but the starboard one has. Now the starboard engine t-stat has gone bad, I was just wondering if it even matters putting it back in! The port engine (w/out t-stat) runs about 145 at idle and about 160 to 165 cruise + speeds. Of course the starboard engine was only a few degrees warmer when the t-stat was working.
I wonder if not having a t-stat would improve circulation somewhat? |
Re: Thermostat or not?
I run in warm water most of the time and my builder keeps telling me that I don't need a thermostat. My water temps are up there and my oil temps will get to 180-200.
