info on Volvo 600 dpx package

I have looked thru the back threads and found some decent info but am looking for updated information. I am looking at a boat with this package and while I have no fear about the motors, I am a little concerned about the outdrives. I see that guys have had good luck in the past but am wondering about rteplacement parts, if necessary, and anything else that might be an issue. I have no first hand experience with this package. Hopefully somebody can help me out?

Thanks, Mark

Re: info on Volvo 600 dpx package

Nobody hear that can relate their experiences with at least the DPX drive? I realize the volvo 600 motors are not very common, but somebody must know somebody who has DPX drives????

Thank you Lakeside for the info.

Re: info on Volvo 600 dpx package

Innovation Marine built the 600's for Volvo. I believe that Volved stopped production on this package due to the drives not holding up to the 600 hp.

Yes, I am definitelt not afraid of the engines, except maybe from a resale perspective, but its hard to be afraid of Innovation built stuff. The drives are what worries me. this is what I am trying to get peoples experience with. the kind of thing you are talking about. thanks Otis311

The German Hustler dealer had those engines / drives in his 388 Slingshot

Feel free to contact him for more accurate info

[email protected]

I remember, engines were nearly bulletproof :D ...but he broke a drive

The info I gave you came right from Innovation Marine. I was interested in the 600 hp engines they had when I was going to repower. They were selling them at about 1/2 the retail price due to Volvo dropping the program due to drive failure

Innovation Marine should be able to answer all your questions.

The only drive failures that were occuring happened when the X dimensions were raised too high in an attempt to squeeze out every last 1/10 mph and the drives became surface piercing, which they are not designed to do. This created a harmonics problem and led to a few drive failures.

Volvos are TOUGH drives. I would take a DPX over a Bravo any day of the week. I would have more peace of mind with 700 hp in front of a Volvo than I would with 500 in front of a Bravo!

Built in external steering is sweet too. IMO Volvo was ahead of their time with the 500 and 600 DPX packages but just couldn't bust into the hi-po market thet Merc owns.

According to the German Hustler dealer, his 388 Slingshot was 5 - 7 mph slower   with the DPX drives then same powered 388 Slingshots with Bravo XR's....

I too am a fan of most of the VP stuff.. Bravos & Alphas dont have oil circulation pumps either.

The duo prop design can add a little drag compared to a single prop drive..

Re: info on Volvo 600 dpx package

My old boat had a single prop SX drive and my friend had the same boat with a DPS duoprop(not DPX) and our top speeds were identical. Not saying that's normal but that was my experience in a small single V-bottom. If you're losing 5-7 mph it's setup IMO.

Re: info on Volvo 600 dpx package

In the < 70 mph zone maybe.. Even with a Merc Bravo 3 it will be hard to go faster then 65 - 70 MPH ....

Merc also recommands B3 drives for boats only up to 65 MPH...

Twin prop drives (Merc or VP) are not suited for speeds + 90 MPh like a 388 Slingshot does...

The Bravo 3 and the DPX are two totally different animals.

Re: info on Volvo 600 dpx package

Thanks for the info guys. I know that the boat runs in the 93 mph range. This is confirmed by Powerboat when they tested the boat in 1999. They were very favorable of it with the 600 DPX package. does anyone have a tel # for Innovation Marine? Thanks.

I have no opinion on the drive. I am just passing along info that was told to me by Rick at Innovation

How many hours are the 600's good for? Any top end concerns like head gaskets?

C_Spray 09-28-2012 08:57 PM

I had what might have been a head gasket issue on one of my 600's early on. (The engine was rebuilt under warranty, and I was not supplied any details.) Since then, I put another 400 hours on the engines with no issues. I had the heads pulled for inspection/valve job and springs, and have run another 250 hours with no issues. Still haven't touched the lower ends. Innovation claims to have a set on the west coast with over 700 hours and counting. These engines are highly regarded by anyone who has owned them.

eddie 09-29-2012 12:04 AM

So you have 650 hours on a pair now?

Spent some time driving the 382 now and I'm impressed with the 600 EFI's. Talked to Dave Stiff at Innovation Marine and he emailed me some info on the motors.

Good looking with Stelling headers too!

scarabman 10-17-2012 05:50 PM

I believe I have around 300 or so on mine and other than a few clogged injectors, and 1 heat exchanger I have had 0 issues and they are untouched. I did a compression check over the summer for giggles and they are still very good at +/- 165 each.

Eddie - That particular boat was converted to Bravos, correct?

My engines are at 664 hours. I repainted and converted them to serpentine belts while they were out for a re-rig. I also scored the only two top shrouds ever made while I was at Innovation this spring... :)

Correct, it has Stelling Boxes and Bravo XR's.

Lots of calls on it, but no one has pulled the trigger. It's a nice boat 100% freshwater and one owner with a trailer. It's got Bravo I 30 pitch (restamped 33) props on it, I'm told with some other props it runs mid 80's. Best I've seen is 72, will it hit 80's with different set of props?

Mine ran 78.7 with the DPX's when it was brand new in 2000, before we moved all our crap into it. It will still run 70+ now, though I rarely thrash it any more. I would expect that Bravos would be good for another 1-2 mph, especially on boxes.

I went with the DPX's for cruise efficiency and reliability, and they have not disappointed me in the least. They are awesome around the docks as well.
