Big block starter options
Need to replace the starter on the boat. Having problems finding a starter for the boat locally.
Is there a starter at the local autoparts that will fit a 502mpi engine until I can get a good marine starter. If so,,,does someone have the part number for it? If not ,what are my options? Thanks , Shawn |
Re: Big block starter options
Shawn,
Look in the yellow pages for a starter altenator rebuilder. 99% of the time the starter can be rebuilt in a day or less. I would not recommend putting a car starter on it. |
Re: Big block starter options
I just took my 29 Scarab in to the shop because of hard starting. I called this morning, and they have already ordered me a new starter. They did not even call to let me know. I think that most starters run around $200 for the 502 engines.

Re: Big block starter options
I was a little pissed because they did not call me first. I thought that it might be the silenoid as I could hear a clicking when batteries were connected before as it energized, but now there is no sound at all when connecting the batteries. Also, there was a strong electrical smell when trying to start the motor.

Good point. Thanks
Sorry 29scarab, I did not mean to hijack your thread. Here is a link for Mercruiser parts. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser_parts.asp |

Re: Big block starter options
www.dbelectrical.com sells the small GM style hi torque marine starter for around $110. I've used a few and have outlasted my $210 Napa marine one's.
Just my experience which is just a handful of replacements. BTW: always get new bolts with a starter replacement. A broken starter bolt in a boat will likely ruin your day, week, or even two. |
