condensation watertemp ?
I have 2 fresh 502 mpi noticed water in oil last week went in to shock pulled plugs most have moisture, good compression all cylinders. pulled manifold water in bottom (dana flows) water temp runs around 150 could this be condensation or do I have bigger problems? no water in starboard side but moisture on plugs. Seems like I had a trace of moisture in starboard last year but changed and it went away. Both motors seem to have the same symptons. Would hotter thermostat help? I'm in east tenn fairly humid don't know if this matters. motors run fine. Just don't to do any damage

Re: condensation watertemp ?
What risers are you using? What was done to your 502's? Specifically the camshaft.
|
Re: condensation watertemp ?
I have the long aluminum risers the engine work nothing big time a little head work. roller cam nothing real radical i'll find the specs tonite tyler crokett reprogramed the ecm I gave him spec and said reversion shouldn't be a problem K&N arrester thats about it. I have adjustable fuel pressure regulators but haven't put them on. I do like the dana flows. I also have external exhaust flappers

Re: condensation watertemp ?
Was the dock or heads decked ? I've seen a few 454/502 MPI's leak water from intake manifold not machined to fit new location of the head ports from block and/or heads being cut.
|
Re: condensation watertemp ?
yes they were with some port work. would this happen on both engines? I didn't do any of the work. It just seems odd that moisture is showing up on both motors doesn't it.

Re: condensation watertemp ?
Is there any way too much water pressure could cause any of this? I'm desperate and grasping at straws

Re: condensation watertemp ?
i was having the same problem with my 502, like you i was concerned. i took the boat to my engine builder, he said if the intake gasket was leaking the oil level in the pan would rise, mine was fine, motor ran great.i did notice the motor was sweating when not in use,i pulled the valve covers and they were wet underneath, aluminum rockers were also. flushed the motor out with fresh oil, even pulled the oil pan plug to make sure i got as much out as possible, refilled with with fresh oil and ran and it was fine. engine builder told me to leave the oil caps off the motor when not in use so it can breath. seems to have solved the issue so far.i just check it before every use,by the way this occcured during hot humid weather.i 'm running the crane 731 roller, with lightning headers, 140 t stat

Thanks I'm willing to try anything

Re: condensation watertemp ?
To have condensation in the valve train is common, especially on motors not running a thermostat. My initial thought is you're expiriencing a reversion problem. The long alumium risers are borderline on the cam your using. How bad is the oil milking up?

Re: condensation watertemp ?
I really don't how to answer the the oil was still darker than a milkshake after maybe 15 hours maybe a little more but happened quickly (over weekend) I check oil every weekend. I usually use 2 to 4 hours weekend. 95% of use is 2800 to 3000 rpm honestly! I did 100 mile poker run prior week ran it but didn't abuse it 4000 + rpm ocasional 5000 boat ran the best it every has. went out short easy ride following week the the water showed up
|
Re: condensation watertemp ?
Has the boat ran successfully without having oil in the water with the current exhaust setup in normal operating conditions? If yes, and this problem is just starting, it's probalby not reversion. If this problem has been present from the day you installed the exhaust, it could be a reversion problem.

Re: condensation watertemp ?
boat has history of problems motors stock with mercruiser manifolds with no baffles ,flappers or any thing I know stupid didn't know any better water in cylinder blown head gasket. repaired added dana flows motor left stock still had problems with moisture thought it was backwash. rebuilt to present specs with external flapers this is where I'm at also tried stealth flapper by eddie blew them out in no time would different risers cure reversion or is the cam ? thanks for your help and time

Re: condensation watertemp ?
224, 230 on a 114LSA and installed 4 degrees advanced and with relatively short seat duration shouldn't revert with any exhaust . I said 'shouldn't ' , not 'won't '.
Are your tailpipes low ? In the water ? Waves splash into them ? Following seas come over them ? Did this moisture show before or after baffles blew out ? If there is water in the lower manifold section when removed, either the engine is 'sucking water' , the exhaust is leaking internally, or water goes up thru tailpipe and then into the motor on it's own. I would have to give a 98% chance it's not engine reversion. More likely, intrusion. |
Re: condensation watertemp ?
The boat sits low in the back tailpipes are about 8" above water surface I put internals on at the same time I did external but they didn't last 20 minutes so I thought the external was enough but I did have the problem before & after I've been extremely careful about backwash thinking this was what caused it all along. I don't slow down abrubtly anchor time is in coves. the boat stays on a lift the lake can be rough sometimes (fort loudon tennessee river) there was water in bottom of manifolds I don't see how it curl back into the pipes especially at the angle it is. I have thru hull picks and it runs ALOT of pressure didn't know if that could tie to the problem. manifolds look to have been burning clean. I don't where to stat elminating causes

Re: condensation watertemp ?
This may sound stupid but could I be getting the water by raising or starting the boat level on the lift instaead of natural angle

Re: condensation watertemp ?
Reversion shows up at idle. Were you idling a lot when the milkshake happened. Make sure your idle is set at 800 rpm. above that is hard on the drives when shifting, below that promotes reversion.
|
Re: condensation watertemp ?
Yes I was idleing alot intentionally because I just put on a new raw water pump and fuel pump. It had been dying after extended idleing seems to have fixed, I hope! Not really enough time to tell for sure. Idle is set at 800 to 850

Re: condensation watertemp ?
I'm getting that you ran it pretty hard and had no prob. Then after an easy weekend you saw the moisture. Perhaps it is an oil temp. prob. and not water temp. If you run easy and the oil temp. doesn't get to over 212* F., water (being one of the products of combustion) will accumulate. Maybe an oil temp gage is in order before you start tearing things apart. --- Jer

Re: condensation watertemp ?
Patriyacht Has A Good Point. Mine Started Dropping Cylinder When The Idle Was Below 800 For Some Time When I Had Eddie Marine Manifolds. Raising The Idle To 1000 Was A Temporary Fix For Me Until I Changed To Dry Risers. Raising The Idle Mite Tell You Whats Going On.

Re: condensation watertemp ?
In my opinion, with that wild cam, the riser would need to be 3 or 4 feet long NOT to revert at idle. From all the descriptions, I'm sure that it is reversion.

Re: condensation watertemp ?
would a warmer thermostat help the mechanic working on it wants to try that. It has a 160 now Is this really a good idea with it being an efi ?
|
Re: condensation watertemp ?
I wouldn't really call that cam 'wild' by any means. Could an exhaust revert with it ? maybe - but it wouldn't be a good performance system if it did. Remember, it has 224° 230° at .050" ground on a 114° LSA. Unless actual overlap is huge, but it appears not with only 5° overlap at .050: and the rel short deat duration. I know - .006".
The 500EFI cam is 'bigger' than his. Is this exhaust set up for silent choice ? Meaning: super short risers ? Or 'copied ' cam specs incorrectly ? Comp likes 110° and 112° LSA cams, but your part# doesn't come up with a card online. Maybe custom ground cam .... |
Re: condensation watertemp ?
I really want to thank everbody for all the imput I'm not mechanical and really about to pull my hair out. I rechecked specs copy I was supplied with. I can't see where i missed anything I don't even understand them anyway .couldn't get part # to pull up ether 11-000-8 serial# c4116. anyway I have the dana marine long aluminum risers not the short ones for silent choice. maybe I should try the stainless vortec ones I know it would be cheaper and easier than new motors THANKS AGAIN for all the help
