Changing Impellars, popping off old impellar key?

I've changed impellars before. My question is when you have a burned up impellar wheel and basically all that is left is the inner metal piece attached to the pulley, what is the easiest way to get it off? Before I tried prying off with a screwdriver and it worked ok but took awhile cuz I didn't want to cause damage. What does everyone suggest for removing these?
