you have to remember back in the dark ages that the LS6 chevelle was set up like crap for drag racing w/the worse tires man has ever seen, and people were stupid enough to think things like a "rock crusher" 4 spd was a strong transmission.

my old daily driver beater that i picked on the local kids on saturaday nights when i didn't want to bring the fast car out was an '80 monte, w/a bone stock never freshened 72 truck 402 long block, 90,0000 mile, 8.5 to 1 motor with a summit cam #SUM-1303, victor O intake, 800 DP holley, 2500 stall, 4.10 gears.

on 26 - 10.5 E/T slicks it went 12.90 @ 106. even 3 years later when the poor old thing was loosing it's stock gm rings it ran 13.40 - .50s all day at the local bracket races.
AND that thing weighed 3550lbs w/out a driver.
Did I mention the "rock crusher" anywhere? Didn't think so. A semi-auto is the way to go. A bone stock with cam, intake, carb and probably an accel ignition? Doesn't sound too stock for me but you had a nice combo there. The 4.10 gear was the icing on the cake. You got out of the quarter and the engine was at top output which is what we want to achieve.

No offense taken bro, but as a matter of fact, I did drag race a fair bit. Had a 78 cutlass supreme, 350 .020" over, 10:1,crane cams, edelbrock scorpio intake, holley 3310 vac sec (better for driving around) roller rockers, ported heads with 2.02" and 1.60" valves, 350 semi-auto trans, 3500 stall converter, 3.73 12 bolts posy rear end, air bag to help for traction and the blue bottle in the trunk when things were getting serious. The car was a nice 3225 pounds with a full tank of gas. Had a steady 13.2 ET with 295/50/15 street tire on engine only and low 12 with nitrous and slick but that is beside the point.
A stock 454 won't get a 3800 pounds car into the 12 without major work and that's a fact. One will need cams, headers, carbs and intake, good fire and so on . Major torque to get it down there with a 3.73 gear. A hundred pound had 0.1 sec on a quarter mile on average. No need to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out.
I've been on the track enough and read every issues of Hot rod, super chevy, car craft etc. just to help me in my speed addiction and nowhere in all my research could I had get this done with a near stock 454.
That's all I'm gonna say about this.

The setup you just said here might be good for mid 14 at best.

Okay, I thought long and hard (it was long time ago - bit it was my beginning into 'what it takes to go quick on abbudget.') and you are kind of correct.

Here's the build up(s) and the recipes to do it.

Things that remained same thru all following builds where the weight, Hooker 2" Primary Super Comp headers, and an 8.5" rear with stock posi unit, 3.73 gears, and a turbo 350.

Build one:
454
cast flat top pistons, 3/8" rods, cast crank, 2 bolt mains
'781 heads
new bearings, rings - no machine work. Done in the garage.
heads had guides + vlave seats reground. Including valve springs was $250 at local rebuilder (not performance place)
Torker intake
Holley 3310 vac sec
Trw or Mellings 218 at .050 cam. Can't remember lift or LSA.
TCI 11" $180 converter. 1800-2000 stall ?
2.25" flowmaster exhaust for Buick Grand National's
Ran 13.20's

===============

Studied camshafts and then changed cam to your standard 454 aftermarket performance
224, 234 at .050" , .544" lift hyd cam
Ran 12.80's .

=================
Added : Dart oval port heads (this was early 90's still)
Torque Tech 3" exhaust w/ Dynomax Super Turbo's
Ran 12.40's.

So, yes. You where correct. Sorry. It did not run this ET with the stock '781's. But close. See above.

==================

Here's some budget blowing but still very cheap build that ran good in same car.

Stock 454 crate shortblock (approx 8.9:1 or so in this engine build)

Same Dart Oval ports with updated valve springs
Dart Oval Port single plane intake
850 swap meet $100 Holley
MSD 6A
Lunati solid lifter cam 249, 259 at .050" with .612", .612" and 109LSA.
ATI 8" converter made to have 'soft hit'. In car it had brake stall of approx 3800-4000 stall. True stall was 4900-5000.

11.60's with funny (ie: bad) high 1.60's 60ft times. We kept it this way so we could keep the 8.5" rear alive. More ET in better short times but heh, I was in college - I needed drinking money too.

Bench seat, column shifter, no roll bar/cage. Was fun.

Anyway - the above is recipes that ended up working good from miniscule budget. I gave out the info because I like to share.

It's free info I give out here on forums. SO, it's there to take or dismiss.

there are a lot of factors at play here dont go to 4,10s unless you are sure your motor can handle it
rpm red line ?
cam?
carburator?
Tire size?
Trans gear ratio?

I have a 1970 elco that does 13.98 with 275 rear gears I think yor car will be close to that 13.3 I dont think you wil get past 13's
engine 355
world heads worked
holley 4150 750 dbl/pmper
high lift cam
elec fuel pump
elec fan god for 30 hp gain
underdrive pulley system
3500 stall tci hole shot ? lockup or not
235 60 15's bfgoodrich
Despite what popular belief is the elco has a verey close front to back weight distribution as the 70 chevelle plus my battery is in the back and the fuel cell is as far back as possible
I will install a 12 posi with 410's i know my motor will handle the high revs 6500 no problem

On this I'm thing 13.5 - 13.8 but I fully agree with SB that it sure is a nice setup for a NOS cheater system (150hp-250hp) and the best thing is that you can enjoy the car everyday and going out for those saturday night drive. I'll always enjoy the smell of a nice burnout and the way you're setting up your car, I bet you do too. To help with the suspension setup, I'd recommend the little air balloon that goes inside the coil spring. You go to the track and put 4-5 pounds in the passenger side bag to keep the car staight when under full lauch. (no lifting of front left wheel and the traction is on.
Enjoy your car.

Wow, I missed this thread weeks ago. I like the thread good info a suggestions. I ran a 78 Z28 383 Stroker motor ( 10.1 comp Fuelie heads fully ported, Edlebrock intake 2000 RPM Stall, 4.10 gears on 275/50/15 street tires) approx 400hp. No dyno just a guess, I ran 12.80s all day long. Had i run slicks I think low 12's were possible. The weight should be about the same as your Chevelle (3600-3700 lbs) so I would expect high 12's to low 13's. Please keep us informed on your performance...
