Mid to low 12's IF set up properly,13.00's to 14 if not. The gto I race runs 11.70-11.80 with 330 hp at the tires, figure driveline robs 80-100 hp between the th-400 and 12 bolt rearend so it has around 400 to 425 hp at the crank but weighs a little less than a street chevelle and isn't turning any accesories,Smitty

when you say set up properly, give me some examples, I want to get it set up right. I would love mid 12's

High 11's to low 12's with good suspension setup.

I'll say mid 13. This is a heavy car and 3.73 are good for street but not enough for the track, the engine won't be able to give his all on quarter mile. Trial it and then consider 4.10 or maybe even 4.56 depending on traction.

Going by memory................

Most average cars I saw run with that same engine build was mid to high 12's.

Older Camaro with 4 speed, 4:10's and 10.5 M&H's ran 12.0's

70' Nova with six point cage, no rear seat, fiberglass hood, 4:10's, 10.5 M&H's, 3800-3900 stall ran high 11's. I forget weight but was very light. Driver was maybe 160lbs soaking wet.

We race near sea level.

Anyway, converter, gear, tire, frt and rear suspensions mods, and WEIGHT have as much to do with it as HP, maybe even more so.

BTW: Don't necessarily go by the stall I mentioned. We played with converters on each car trying to hook up on the street and such. $600-$900 a converter was typical for us, even with the milder motors.

Exhaust was always 3" mandrel bent with either Dynomax Super Turbo's (stealth) or Flowmaster's (loud)

Get it out and run it. Then do some tweaks and run it again. The name of the game is besting your ET's as time goes on, that's the fun. You'll always be beat by some other cars.

Solid or boxed adjustable rear trailing arms help. Get that pinion angle correct !!!! Coil springs, rear sway bar, maybe even a air bag for rear, etc, etc, etc.

All depends on where you want to go. It's just as endless as boats. :D

The question you have to ask your self is what are you going to do with the car? What is it you enjoy?A good friend of mine owns a 69 gto that he keeps in my barn,I do alot of free work to it and in turn I race it in the spring and fall when I'm not boating. It ran 13.40's a few years ago in street/strip trim but the owner NEVER drove it anywhere on the street and was constantly telling me he wanted it to go faster. Once you decide a car doesn't have to do multiple things that are compromises (like idle in traffic and carry passengers) then you can pretty easily make it run substantially faster. I re-geared the gto from the 4.10 gears it had to 5.13's,put drag shocks on it,took out the extra seats, freshened the trans and added a trans brake, took the power steering, brakes and alternator off it,put slicks on it,open headers, solid lifter cam etc, etc. That got car into very low 12's,we experimented with different timing, jetting, carbs, carb spacers, shock settings, driving techniques, shift points, fuel pressure, now the car will run 11.70's with my fat azz in it and high 11.60's with the owner in it (he weighs 90lbs less than me). On the chassis dyno this car makes less than 340 hp at the tires. You could do the same thing with your chevelle, BUT, if going to the dragstrip and chasing faster e.t.'s isn't the only thing you plan on doing than you have to compromise and car will be signifigantly slower but probably more all around fun.If I owned a classic muscle car,I would rather have it in street trim running mid 13's and put a few miles on it with my wife or a couple buddys driving around then trailer it to the track,Smitty

opps! Didn"t see the gear ratio. High 12's most likely low 13's
