Winter Engine Layup
Does anyone else back the rocker arms off during winter layup?
Just wondered what opinions are on this. |
Re: Winter Engine Layup
Nope, but I do fire it and warm it up from time to time.

Re: Winter Engine Layup
I ususally bump the starter every several weeks. PIA to remove the valve covers.

Re: Winter Engine Layup
I back mine off every year. I pull all the pushrods to check them for straightness. Also, I check all the spring pressures. IMO, valve train is the most important part of your engine.

Re: Winter Engine Layup
I used to squirt a little engine oil in each cylinder and turn it over a few times. Put in fresh plugs, and fire it up in the spring. No problems.

Re: Winter Engine Layup
I've never done it and never had any issues, but it does make alot of sense.
I guess if you can pull your cover off easily, it would be smart. |
Re: Winter Engine Layup
Even if the lifters were to bleed down a little... they will pump back up the first time oil gets to them. My concern about letting an engine sit for a long time is corrosion on the cylinder walls from moisture. A tablespoon of oil in each cylinder will take care of that problem for the length of one winter.
