Re: msd starter saver

I have been running them on 540's with locked timing. Yes I would use them again. Last year I ruined about 6 starters, this year none.

What problem do they resolve and how?

Re: msd starter saver

They retard the timing 10 or 20 deg. on startup till 800 rpm and if the eng. drops below 500 rpm the retard again

Re: msd starter saver

The engines would kick back and destroy the gear drives in those little starters. I set them for 20 degrees retard and the engines turn over like stockers.

Ian,
What is the advantage of this MSD retard system vs. using the standard MSD non-lock out method with the springs?

Re: msd starter saver

They idle better with the locked timing. Not much but better. :D

Re: msd starter saver

I run almost all my engines locked out on timing and have never had a starter problem whether Supercharged or N/A. Over time the weights and spring assemblies get rusted and stick and I have even seen springs break.

Eliminatethis, my family has had a cottage on Maceday Lake for about a hundred years. I was a St. Clair Shores resident but my work got moved to Pontiac so I moved to Waterford. I remembered what a nice lake Maceday was so I bought a house there. Glad to know there's more offshore nuts in the area.

I run a modified ProCharged 454 and will upgrade ignition between seasons. Should this be part of my project?

Re: msd starter saver

as far as i can see it can't hurt but if you did not have them and had a starter fail from adv. you would wish you had put them on
