Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
I have a oppertunity to buy a pretty bad ass 5.4L ford Dual Over Head Cam motor already equipped with a Novi Supercharger, DFI, and everything else good to go with it. Has anyone tried using one of these motors before? it should make 750-800hp on pump gas and gobs of torque. has anyone ever seen anyone use these types of bombos? Anyone know where i may be able to find a set of headers or exhaust manifolds for this motor? and help or suggestions would be helpfull. If i can dig up the exhaust, i will remove the speedmaster3/aluminum head 480CID big block. I may be taking offers on the SSm3/bbc bombo if anyone is interested.
Thanks for any help or comments. DT |
Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
I don't think anyone has ever made a marine version of the mod motors. I'm not sure how well it would cool
I don't know much about the subject other than i have one of those in my truck and it runs good. |
Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
you'll want to think hard about closed cooling with the aluminum motor. Something like that will need a pretty big heat exchanger. Dunno who makes marine exhaust yet for it.

Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
dunno the port spacing, but if the ports are similarly spaced to a "Windsor" or "Cleveland" motor, then you can have a set of adaptor plates machined for a few bucks that will let you run any of the ones readily available for the existing Fords.
Your best bet is to go buy a pair of exhaust manifold gaskets for a DOHC Cobra Mustang and then compare them to the 5.0L Gasket, the 351W Gasket, and the 2V 351C gasket. Oddly enough, you should also compare to BBC gasket and 460 Ford gasket. You never know... As I say, port spacing is your primary concern. Second to that would be bolt interference. Let us know what you come up with. Once you find a close match. |
Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
excelent idea, thanks for the thought. I think i found my winter project.
I run always in fresh water so do you think ill still need a closed cooling system? there is always cool great lakes water running through the sea pump. Or, is that the reason i need closed loop cooling? maybe the cold water would hurt the aluminum heads? im not sure but the cool water never hurt my BBC aluminum heads. Thanks Guys |
Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
I wouldn't sell your existing engine/drivetrain until you put a full season on this small motor/big boost unproven in marine conditions package.
My 02. BTW: What kind of boat and weight do we have ? |
Re: Over Head Cam ford motor suggestions
24 predator marine viper.about 4000-4500lbs. she will definately get a healthy donse of dyno time before i even attempt to put her in my predator. maybe late in the summer to get a few weekends on it and see what happends. so i dont loose a whole summer chasing gremlins. you saw the movie right, get a gremlin wet and it multiplies!
