Merc Outboard Bore Job

My friend has a late 70's vintage 175 Merc V-6 that needs to be bored .Does anyone know of a shop in the Toledo ,Detroit,Sandusky or within reasonable driving distance area with a good reputation?I personally don't know of anyone in Toledo that can bore a V-6 Merc block.

Thank You
Rob

Re: Merc Outboard Bore Job

There's nothing to boring a merc block. Anybody with a Bridgeport style milling machine and a boring head can do a passable job. The 1st gen black maxes were iron liners I believe and were easily bored. The 2nd gens were chrome over iron. You could bore them, but you had to run chrome rings. LA Sleeve also makes sleeves for those motors if he wants to keep the bore stock on it.

Late models run Nikasil over aluminum. If you bore them you have to send it out to get a new treatment and you oughta do all the holes if you do this.

But it baffles me that people are not wanting to bore your motor for you. It's duck soup.
