Re: 496 HO not starting any ideas
Tighten the cable to the starter. Happended to me late last season. Tightened it up and no more problem.

Sounds reasonable will use my medical hammer, still can't find the starter though anybody have a schematic of the engine, should I be able to reach it from the top??

Rick, the starter is aft under the stbd side exhaust manifold by your bellhousing. So yes you should be able to get at it (might [will] get some scratch on your arm). if you go in between both engine. I've mark where the location is with the arrow on the pic.

Re: 496 HO not starting any ideas
There is also a fusible link on the cable at the starter post connection.Use a continuity tester check this before you remove the starter, we have seen these go bad and kill power to the starter solenoid and hence no start. Turn the battery power off before you do this test or work on the starter. Shorting the battery cable lead to the starter can lead to some serious arching and damage!

Make sure the main ground lugs, on the bell housing are tight, and making a good conection.

Re: 496 HO not starting any ideas
Had the same problem on one of my HO's fall of 2005. Turned out to be the battery cable at the starter was loose on my port enige. Initially just took one of my poles to my cover and gave it a shove tight getting it to start. Eventually took a couple of extensions and a universal joint socket adapter and got it tightened up. No problem since. Beyond that work your form battery up front to the ignition switch cleaning and tightening.
