598 - which heads and cam for 750hp

I am freshening a pair of 598's and was wondering what everyone things is a good combination for this engine is to make about 750hp. I would like to see that hp in the 5400-5600 rpm range.

Which heads, flow numbers to make that power.
Which cam and intake.
What is minimum exhaust needed.

Thanks,
Rick

Re: 598 - which heads and cam for 750hp

Dart 355 Pro1's for heads.

You need a BIG hydralic (custom) cam, I would talk to several sources on what to run. Rmbuilder, Crane, etc.

Solid roller is easy:. roughly ~262/270 @.050, on 114 and ~.730/.730" max lift.

Shoot for 10:1 CR, (easy with flat tops) Dart or Merlin single plane and a BIG (1250) Dominator...I would recommend talking with Dean Nickerson about the Carb and cam if you go solid roller.

Wette Vette built almost this exact motor with solid roller, I'm sure he'll chime in.

You need good CMI headers.

Did a 590 with Canfield 355's out of the box, 9:1 comp., Crower solid roller that is easy on lifters, .694/.683, 260/272, 106 cl, 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3- firing order, Dart tunnel ram with 950's and made 750 at 5800 on Zul's dyno.

Re: 598 - which heads and cam for 750hp

Rob,
Yes they are Dart Pro 1's. Suppose to be in +700hp range but I am not so sure. The engines are coming apart this week so we will know for sure what is in there. Then the cards will be on the table to see what to do next if anything.

Dean,
I will once we get some data on what is in there now.

Wette Vette around? Sounds like a good one to compare with.

Bob, isn't 106 CL a little close for boat. I thought 112 or 114 was the number. Sounds like dry pipe application...

Thanks, everyone for the info so far.
Rick

Rick -

Get the engines torn down and have LAM advise you. I don't know if they do all their own porting, but Jim V will work magic on those heads:

http://hometown.aol.com/valakoracehe...raceheads.html

That's where mine are going before going to my engine builder. And as always give me a call or an email if you need any assistance.

Rick I am running KE's pipes which are probably as close as your gonna get as far as being "tuned", Thay are pretty much dry, majority goes overboard. Actually I didn't run the motors with the tunnel rams. Went back to the blowers and added intercoolers and said the heck with it :D

Seems like alot of you guys are running big cams. How low do they idle? What happens when you drop it in gear?

What do you think a cam with 244/256 @50 and 0.632" lift on 114 will do/make in this engine?

Rick

Re: 598 - which heads and cam for 750hp

Several people are advising big heads and big cams. In your first post you stated your goals of 750 hp at @ 5500. With 598's it's not hard to make 750. 355cc heads and long duration cams will push the power peak too high up in rpms. Look at building an engine like gg10's with a smaller cam. Several of us are using AFR315's and 335's on 540's with cams around 236/240 duration .630 lift making around 700hp. Using those same components will make more hp on a 598 just because of the larger cubes.

That cam is good in a Gm iron headed large cube engine. The long exhaust duration helps out the poor exhaust port. If you are going to use a modern cyl head, a cam with a smaller split between intake duration and exhaust will make more hp.

You can get them to idle ~900 and they drop to 650 in gear. No big deal if your carb is tuned. We run those Crane 651 cams in 502 blower motors and power peaks at ~6100. I agree with Patri, there are better cams to run with good heads...I would go with 6-8 split on 114 or even 115 if you want bette idle...If you're going to spend the $$ why stop at 750hp...another 75-100hp is easy on essentially the same componets. For reference, I ran a 272/278 @.050 on 114 and 280/288 on 115 in 632" tunnel ram motor. power peak was 6100 and 6600 respectively. The second cam was a little ridiculous and very hard on parts. Keep net lift around .700" and with "soft lobes" with a solid roller and you will get good life out of the valvetrain. I have no idea's with Hydralic roller since I never ran in that motor. Wette Vettes ~262/270 on 114 would be a better choice based on your desired rpm..but it keeps pulling past 6000.

Re: 598 - which heads and cam for 750hp

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the cam isn't the best out there considering the heads are Dart Pro1 and the exhaust is EMI elbow top.

Rick, Just for reference, I have HR 248/258*@.05--608/617" on 114 in the 557's with 350 heads and 5psi of boost....850HP@5600rpm

R. V. I'm on the south side and have a set of N/A 540's that make 730 hp. with unported darts. P.m. me and we can talk. If you have seen or been on any CPC run you'll know our boat.
