Module Identification - How to tell?

I have two different Mercruiser modules that someone gave me.
One is stamped 6D12A V8 HP, the other says 4J15A V8 HP. Can any one tell me, how I can decifer what these are and what they came off of?

Correction, I mean't they are ignition amplifiers.
Anybody know what the numbers mean?

Don't know what the first numbers mean. Probably just superceeded part numbers. They are ignition modules and control the timing advance. All V8 HP modules give 20* of timing advance all in by 3000rpms.

BTW, hang onto them as they are now a discontinued part.
