oil cooler recomendation
I am in the middle of a complete rebuild of a couple 502's (one at a time) and from reading many of the treads it is good insurance to replace the cooler to reduce more chances of introducing unwanted junk in the lube system.
I am considering the oem 3'x20' mercruiser cooler with ps fitting (817577t). The main reason for the oem is convenience of using old mounting, oem hoses and it is nicely tucked above the bell housing. Is this an adaquate cooler for 500 hp n/a application? Thanks |

You might try and find a take off off some 500efis'That might be easierand cheaper .Might get expensive the other way ,cooler, brackets, making up the hoses etc

Strip, that is a nice setup you got there-saw your build thread. :drink:
buying used I would be just as concerned as what I have now with contaminants. I have a good amount invested in this(for me), I don't want to take any chances-hence a new cooler. The oem repl to my 3x20 cooler is $550.00; must be made of solid gold on the inside. |

But is it worth taking a chance breaking mid season. For me Parts failure is ok but human error is not.I think Trick and Hardin/CP perf have one like mine maybe in the 300 range? The Teaque one is 400 something. My style looks like the old Glenwood marine ones, I dont know who is making it for them. New cooler is smart, if you go used, you wont have any comeback on the builder (nor should you) The 620-650 should be plenty or you can go with a thermostatic one with a separate PS cooler. Get some more opinions on size. Iam on the Gulf coast so temp is a bigger issue down here |

I have the combo power steering / oil cooler. I used the one with threaded pipe on the water inlets for AN lines.

Re: oil cooler recomendation
I'd suggest getting a cooler that is a size or two to big for than you really need. And get it with a thermostat, or get one of the remote mount stats.
