Shortened life of a 525 w/ a Whipple?
I want to put Whipples on my 525's but I have a lot people warning me I will no longer have a turn key boat. I enjoy boating 50-70 hours a year and really enjoy going out and not having any problems. If I put Whipples on my motors how much am I shortening the life of my motor? I would run mild boost if I did it. I've been told you could get 400 hours out of an un-supercharged 525 but what about with. I currently have 70 hours on the motors. Thanks in advance for you help.

You should have no problem getting the normal length life out of your motors. The only thing I will caution you about is that you absolutely need to make sure the fuel mapping is set up correctly. Also get a big fuel pump so it will never go lean. I have heard of a few motors burning up, but I know that was from lean conditions. As I said spend the time and money to have the mapping done IN THE BOAT and you will have turnkey motors. Whipples are awesome!! I run them in my boat and nobody knows they are there unless I tell them.
Go for it!!!! |

Thanks Smitty. If anyone else with a 525 and a whipple could chime in it would be greatly appreciated.

Tyler crockett has put on MANY 525 whipple kits and the ecm is the key. I have been told by several prople that install them that they are not a bolt on and go kit. You HAVE to reprogram the computer that comes with them for peak performance. I would call Tyler before buying.

The 525 kits ARE NOT drop on's....The 500EFI kits pretty much are...

Make sure it's installed correctly, don't cut any corners. Dustin will get the PCM programmed correctly. It should be turn key. As far as life, it all depends on how you run the boat. I just pulled my EFI Whippled 555 apart for a refresh. The engine has 500 hrs, 300 with the Whipple. I was getting excess leakdown on one cylinder was the reason I went into it. Turns out there was a big score causing the problem, not related to the supercharger at all. Other than that it was in perfect shape. It has been totally turn key. All I've done is change the oil a couple of times a season. Never any other maintenance. But, I run the boat easy. Most of those hours are at 3500 RPM or less. If you run it hard life will be less.

Yep. I ran it all summer that way, but knew it was not right. When I installed the blower it started pushing oil out of the breathers a little bit. It probably ingested something when I first rebuilt it 3 years ago and has been that way ever since. It leaked 80% on that cylinder, but the compression test was good. |
