Water mixed with the oil ?
I just purchased a 2000 34' PQ viper with HP500 efi's. the starboard engine has a coating on the oil filler tube that looks like white lithium grease I know that this has to be water mixing with the oil. My questions is how bad is this ? the motor ran just great on the flushing unit. looking into the valve cover thru the oil filler hole everything looked good,no white oil,no rusted springs, nothing. The oil was a shade lighter than the oil in the port engine. Anybody got any experiences with this problem ?

Re: Water mixed with the oil ?
Yup. Possibly condensation. It's worth a closer examination though.

Re: Water mixed with the oil ?
When you say the oil was a shade lighter do you mean "cleaner" this would make me a little suspect of a pre existing condition being covered up. Maybe I am a bit cynical but you get that way working around boats most of your life.

Re: Water mixed with the oil ?
If this engine has a pcv valve make sure it is working correctly. Also make sure the oil temp is getting above 212F.

Re: Water mixed with the oil ?
Probably simple condensation, normal.
CHECK the oil level, is it high? Is it milky? Oil level can vary when the boat's not floating, so if it's high by a quart....no worries. If the answer to both are NO then you probably have no problems. Change the oil and wipe off what you see and it might not be back. |
