Dumb question about steering

What do they use on the high horsepower outboard cats or V's that do not have conventional power steering pumps?

You can still have a hydraulic set up without the pump.

Severl guys in my area run them. I heard they are very hard to dock with though.

Ever drive a car that lost its power steering? At speed you almost don't know the difference but when parking they are 10 times worse then a manual steering box ever could be.
I know this because of the V-8 Vega we built as a kid that didn't have room for the power steering pump. I didn't care then., it was fast. :D

My V8 Evinrude has a factory power steering pump. I am sure others must have them too.

Why dont you run cable steering with wing plates like the ski racers use. There is a 21 foot bullet down here that has twin 2.5 mercs that runs 115 mph and uses pulley system wing steering and a tie rod. Works great. They use it in river races so iguess it must work real good actually. The only thing is that you must mainain it a lot. Jas

Rookie,
The Teleflex Seastar Pro Hydraulic steering system is what most guys use for high peformance, non-power applications.
I've used it on 130 MPH/600HP drag boats, many boat manufacturers use it, so it's well proven stuff. Latham makes nice stuff too, but it's heavy and expensive. It may be better for offshore applications of multiple (3 or more) engines, heavy boats and rough water.
There is very little perceived steering effort, from idle to wot.
