Speed Limits on ICW

Does anyone know where I can get a list of the
speed limit zones on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW)?

Here's a link to the Manatee (lardass) zones that occupy Florida. Just click on a state and it will send you to a link where you can download several PDF's for that county. As you will see, the whole setup can make one more confused than a midget spinning around in a clothes dryer!!

Thanks,
I am planning a trip from Melbourne Beach, FL to DC this Spring, and I am planning on how long to it will take.

Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes. We're going to be making the trip from MD to Ft. Lauderdale next december and then back in March.

The maps show only manatee zones and not other speed zones. I have spent several hours on the phone with all of the Florida Beautacrats, and guess what: Florida doesn't know the speed zones! It is up to the University of Florida to figure it out!

How about you guys in Georga, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Does your state know the speed zones?

There are several guide books on traveling the ICW. Don't they have info on speed limits????

I have never seen "speed limits" .... its no wake ..(SLOW) or safe operation ...here in North Florida there are a lot of "no wake" signs posted by the home owners, which aren't legit. As aways you are responsible for your wake ... Are you doing this in an offshore boat ? sounds like a great trip ...m

Re: Speed Limits on ICW

So what is considered "slow speed" on the charts? Would this mean anything under plaining speed?

Any boat running just below planing speed creates a larger wake than at planing speed.
Usually "Slow Speed" means no wake or as litte wake as possible.

Yes, I have a Sonic 31ss. I may postpone the trip until 2008. My family is planning a long trip to Europe this Summer.

OK, now I see the confusion. Portions of the chart say "Idle Speed" while otheres say "Slow Speed".

I went to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation page and found this. It explains the speed differences.

The trip is on this month. Watch for progress in
the SONIC section.

Good Luck on your trip. When are you getting underway?

myturn 05-02-2008 06:24 AM

May 16th.

VetteLT193 05-02-2008 06:52 AM

I've done that trip once North, once South.

If you don't run parts of it outside you'll likely go insane trying to read and figure out all the different speed signs along the way.

Also, brush up on your navigation signs... The more north you go things look different. For example it seems that you see a lot of range markers up north and they are rarely used in Florida.

Yea I know,

My daughter wants to document the trip.

We may have some long days.

Nothing can be as bad as from Lake Worth
to Fort Lauderdale!

Thanks,

Warren

App with all no wake zone maps in FL

There is an app called WakeWatch that has maps of all of the no wake zones in Florida. It also has all of the bridge heights and opening schedules. It uses your phone's GPS to follow you, too. Has not only no wake zones, but all of the different flavors, like slow speed minimum wake, speed limits, limits only apply to certain times, etc. There are lots of different types. Same information for the state of CT. Only costs $2.

My Navionics app on Ipad gives posted speedlimit based on gps position and boat speed. Easy

Agreed. Doesn't make it less useful though. In Fla any help on this is always a plus.
